No. 16 Women's Tennis defeats Rice, 6-1

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 16 Texas (1-0) swept doubles action and took five of six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 win over Rice (2-1) Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas opened the match with a dominant doubles session. Junior Vanja Corovic and senior Marija Milic teamed up for an 8-3 win at first doubles over the Owls' Julie Chao and Ana Guzman, and UT nailed down the doubles point when sophomore Maggie Mello and freshman Krista Damico knocked off Varsha Shiva-Shankar and Jessica Jackson by an 8-4 count at second doubles. The Longhorns finished off the sweep at third doubles, where sophomores Amanda Craddock and Caroline Larsson dealt Rebecca Lin and Emily Braid an 8-5 defeat.
Corovic pushed the Texas lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Rice's Chao at first singles. Larsson extended the UT cushion to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Owls' Lin at fourth singles, and the Longhorns clinched the victory at sixth singles, where junior Sarah Lancaster posted a 7-5, 6-0 win over Rice's Alex Rasch.
Rice picked up a win at third singles before UT's Damico responded with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Guzman at second singles. Texas' Mello went three sets with Rice's Shiva-Shankar and prevailed at fifth singles, 6-2, 3-6, 3-6.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 at William and Mary.
