No. 27 William and Mary edges No. 16 Women's Tennis, 4-3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- No. 16 Texas (1-1) claimed the doubles point and a pair of singles matches, but No. 27 William and Mary (1-1) outlasted the Longhorns by a 4-3 count Saturday in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center.
Texas won doubles matches at the third and first positions to clinch the doubles point. Sophomores Amanda Craddock and Caroline Larsson dealt the Tribe's Katie Kargl and Carmen Pop an 8-3 defeat at the third slot before William and Mary scored a win at second doubles. Texas junior Vanja Corovic and senior Marija Milic nailed down the doubles point for the Longhorns by outlasting Ragini Acharya and Katarina Zoricic by a 9-7 count at the first position.
William and Mary struck back with consecutive singles wins at the third, second and first positions to claim a 3-1 lead. Texas junior Sarah Lancaster drew the Longhorns within 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Zidek at sixth singles, and Larsson added a 6-0, 6-3 win over the Tribe's Kargl at fourth singles to even the match at three points.
The match's outcome came down to fifth singles, where William and Mary's Pop prevailed by a 6-2, 6-4 count at fifth singles over Texas sophomore Maggie Mello.
Texas wraps up the weekend on Sunday in Williamsburg at 9 a.m. Central when they meet No. 19 Michigan.
