No. 19 Michigan defeats No. 16 Women's Tennis, 5-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- No. 16 Texas (1-2) collected singles wins from sophomores Amanda Craddock and Maggie Mello, but No. 19 Michigan won the doubles points and four singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over the Longhorns Sunday in the third-place match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend event at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Texas pushed Michigan to the limit in doubles play before surrendering the point to the Wolverines. Michigan was victorious at the second slot, but Texas' Craddock and sophomore Caroline Larsson held off Michigan's Lindsey Howard and Denise Muresan at the third slot, 9-7. Texas senior Marija Milic and junior Vanja Corovic went to a tiebreaker at the first slot against Michigan's Tania Mahtani and Chisako Sugiyama, and the Wolverines' duo prevailed by a 7-5 count in the tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point.
Michigan pushed its lead to 2-0 with a win at second singles, and Texas' Craddock put the Longhorns on the board at the sixth slot with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Howard. But, the Wolverines put away the match with consecutive straight-set victories at the third and first slots and assumed a 4-1 lead. Michigan added a straight-set win at fourth singles and UT's Mello closed out the match by outlasting Muresan at fifth singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 at DePaul.
