CHICAGO -- Second-seeded Texas (6-0) claimed the doubles point and collected singles wins from junior Olivier Sajous and sophomores Kellen Damico and Ed Corrie on its way to a 4-0 victory over 15th-seeded Michigan Friday morning in the opening round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Midtown Tennis Club.
Texas moves on to Saturday's quarterfinals where it will meet 11th-seeded Stanford at 9 a.m. Central. The Cardinal knocked off seventh-seeded Florida by a 4-3 count in the opening round.
Senior Miguel Reyes Varela and junior Olivier Sajous picked up an early service break on Michigan's Drew Daniel and Chris Madden and cruised to an 8-2 win at third doubles. Juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala broke open a tight match and went on to an 8-4 win at second doubles over the Wolverines' Andrew Mazlin and George Navas to clinch the doubles point. Texas sophomores Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico held a 6-4 lead over Michigan's Jason Jung and Mike Sroczynski at first doubles before their match was suspended.
With a 1-0 lead after doubles, Texas wasted little time to put away the Wolverines. Sajous dealt Michigan's Daniel a 6-3, 6-3 defeat at fifth singles, and Damico knocked off Mazlin by a 6-2, 6-4 count at second singles. UT picked up the clinching point from Corrie, who finished off Michigan's Peter Aarts, 7-6 (8), 6-1 at third singles.
