SOMERS, Wis. - CollegeSwimming.com has selected University of Texas freshman swimmer Karlee Bispo as its National Women's College Swimmer of the Week after the native Californian won three individual events and assisted in two relay wins while helping the Longhorns to victory over No. 2 Arizona on Jan. 31.
Bispo (Modesto, Calif.) claimed the 200-yard freestyle in a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 1 minute, 46.28 seconds and captured the 100 freestyle in 49.59. Better known from her excellence in the freestyle events, Bispo entered the 100 breaststroke for the first time this season and defeated Arizona All-America breaststroker Annie Chandler. Bispo won the event in 1:01.77.
Bispo anchored UT's first-place 400 medley relay in 48.67 and led off UT's 400 freestyle relay in 49.61. The relay went on to win in 3:17.48. She also led off UT's 200 freestyle relay in 22.99 and took third in the 50 freestyle in 22.94 against the Wildcats.
Bispo's selection as the National Women's College Swimmer of the Week is the third such honor for a Longhorn this season. Freshman Kathleen Hersey has been selected twice for the award.
Bispo and the Longhorns resume competition on Saturday, Feb. 7 against SMU at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
