WAMEGO, Kan. - Texas (14-6, 10-1 Big 12) swept the doubles session and added five singles wins in a 6-1 victory over Kansas State (4-14, 1-10 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at the Wamego Recreational Complex. The Longhorns finish with 10 conference wins for a third consecutive season and will enter this week's Big 12 Championship with a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.
Texas made short work of Kansas State in doubles play to claim the doubles point. UT's 34th-ranked tandem of Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic opened with an 8-6 win over Antea Huljev and Nina Sertic at the first slot. UT clinched the doubles point at the second position, where sophomore Amanda Craddock and junior Krista Damico registered an 8-4 win over the Wildcats' Marija Slupska and Natasha Vieira. Texas finished off the sweep at third doubles, where junior Stephanie Davison and sophomore Caroline Larsson posted an 8-4 win over Petra Chuda and Katerina Kudlackova.
As was the case Saturday at Kansas, Texas claimed the first three decisions to take a 4-0 lead and clinch the team victory. Craddock pushed the UT lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Vieira at sixth singles, and junior Sarah Lancaster finished off a perfect 11-0 conference season with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win over Chuda at fifth singles. Texas sophomore Maggie Mello clinched the match at fourth singles, where she dealt Kudlackova a 7-5, 6-2 defeat.
UT's Corovic added on to the Texas lead at first singles, where she defeated Huljev by a 6-4, 6-4 count. Kansas State's Slupska put the Wildcats on the board after defeating Damico in a third set 10-point tiebreak at second singles before Larsson finished off the Texas victory at third singles with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Sertic at the third slot.
With its first-round bye, second-seeded Texas will open the Big 12 Championships on Friday, April 24 at 3 p.m. in Norman, Okla., against the winner of Thursday's match featuring seventh-seeded Texas Tech and 10th-seeded Oklahoma.
