No. 4 Women's Swimming and Diving knocks off No. 8 Auburn, 134-107

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 4 Texas (5-0) collected two wins apiece from sophomores Kathleen Hersey, Karlee Bispo and Leah Gingrich on its way to a 134-107 victory over No. 8 Auburn Thursday afternoon at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Texas opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as the UT quartet of freshmen Jessica Guro and Laura Sogar, sophomore Kathleen Hersey and freshman Bethany Adams finished in a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 1 minute, 41.44 seconds.
The Horns followed up the relay win by taking first and second in the 1,000 freestyle, as Gingrich led the way by taking first at 9:54.60. Senior Susana Escobar placed second at 10:01.15. The Longhorns collected another one-two finish in the 200 freestyle, as sophomore Bispo picked up the win in a NCAA "B" cut of 1:47.15. Sophomore Katie Riefenstahl took second in 1:48.54.
Freshman Maren Taylor led Texas in the one-meter diving event by taking second with 264.90 points, and freshman Diana Wilcox placed third with 260.10 points. Hersey collected the fourth win for Texas in the 200 individual medley, where she was victorious in a NCAA "B" cut of 1:59.26. Gingrich added a third-place finish in 2:00.75.
Hersey notched her second win of the afternoon in the 200 butterfly, where she tallied a NCAA "B" cut of 1:59.02. Bispo nailed down her second victory of the day in the 100 freestyle, as the 2009 NCAA runner-up finished in 49.71, good for another NCAA "B" cut. Gingrich joined Hersey and Bispo to register her second win of the afternoon in the 500 freestyle, where she posted a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 4:48.76.
Taylor earned Texas a split in the diving events, as she scored a seven-point win in the three-meter event with 315.67 points. Sophomore Lauren Caldwell took third with 303.01 points. Freshman Laura Sogar chalked up a win over Auburn All-American Micah Lawrence in the 200 breaststroke, where she was victorious with a NCAA "B" cut of 2:12.39. Freshman Spindrift Beck placed third in 2:18.22.
Texas ended the meet by taking second in the 400 freestyle relay, as Riefenstahl, Adams, junior Brie Powers and Bispo finished in 3:22.38.
Texas takes on No. 1 Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 9 for Senior Day at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The meet gets underway at 11 a.m. Central.
