POST-GAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Gail Goestenkors
Opening statement: I thought overall we had really good focus and intensity, especially on the defensive end of the floor. This is a really good team. I know they probably didn't look good today. I think we made them look bad, but they are a good team returning all their starters. This was a great game for us to play because they are very strong, physical, and they execute their plays exceptionally. We had to work for everything we got and it wasn't easy. Obviously I'm really proud of Kat [Nash] and Ashley Gayle. They were just monsters on the board for us and really ignited our transition game. Overall, I'm pleased. There are still obviously a lot of things that we can work on and improve upon, and we will, but this was another good stepping stone game for us.
On how they beat Boston today: They score a lot of points and they love to transition. They hadn't played anybody to this point with the same athleticism that we have and that also liked to run. So I think about midway through the first half it was a close game. I thought they got a little fatigued and we were able to continue to run and push tempo. We really started at that point to dominate the boards as well.
On starting 3-0 and scoring 90+ points the first three games: Once we lost Cokie [Reed], when we changed who we're were going to be, we really focused on pushing the ball, pushing the tempo. We said we are going to score a lot of points and we are going to do it in transition. Really, it was before last game when I said I think our goal needs to be to score 100 points every game. Whether we do or don't, I want that to be our goal and that mindset that we are going to push and attack. It has to start on the defensive end of the floor and with our rebounding. We've really focused on rebounding and running.
SENIOR GUARD Kathleen Nash
On settling into the faster tempo game: [Preseason conditioning] really did come in handy today. There were times when I was definitely tired because you go from one end to the other, you rebound, you kick out the ball, and then you're down at the other end trying to rebound. It's a fast pace, but it's a lot more fun.
On her rebounding performance today: I don't remember the last time I've gotten 20 rebounds, maybe in high school. I do feel a little more responsibility. Now that I'm moved to the post, I'm expected to have the number of rebounds that a post would have, so I just tried to step up.
On what she has learned about their team on the whole: I think we've learned that we can run and score. I think we're cutting down on our turnovers a lot, which was a big emphasis for us because it is different to run and not turn it over.
JUNIOR POST Ashley Gayle
On settling into the faster tempo game: I would definitely say our preseason conditioning and all that training is definitely showing now. It was a really tough preseason, I think we did more running than any other year I've been here, but you can really see it coming into play. We're playing teams and running back and forth and transitioning on them. I think some teams get to a point where they just aren't going to try and stop you, so you just keep going. It feels good when it's in the second half and you aren't feeling fatigue.
On leading the team in blocks: I guess it's more of an energy play. I blocked a lot of shots in high school. It's a high intensity game, so when you have a team coming at you and driving it through the lane, you just kind of bait them in. Your teammates know that you are there to help them, so there is definitely that trust there that their guards know if the other person drives and they can't hold them, I'll try and block it. It's definitely fun and I think it kind of gives the team a little more energy on the court.
