Texas coach Gail Goestenkors promised her Texas Longhorns to be small and scrappy. Leave it to a freshman post to steal the first show.
Anne Marie Hartung produced a double-double off the bench with 26 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs, as the Longhorns boasted six players in double digit scoring to rout Trinity 132-38 in an exhibition victory on Friday night at the Frank Erwin Center.
The Longhorns debuted small, with effectively four guards and a post in the starting lineup. They converted that speed and quickness into early transition opportunities. UT's first 13 points came off turnovers, and 50 of UT's 77 first-half points resulted from Trinity giveaways.
Trinity averaged more than 70 points per game last season and finished 17-9 overall, but the Tigers were limited to just 16 field goals on 33 percent shooting and needed almost five minutes before they made their first shot from the floor. Anne Waidelich led Trinity with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting.
"I was anxious to see if our hard work in practice was going to pay off," Goestenkors said. "We've been working on our transition game and attacking the basket. We've been working on our defense."
Kathleen Nash and Chassidy Fussell each scored 21 points. Nash went 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range. Yvonne Anderson added 20 points, Ashleigh Fontenette scored 17 and freshman Chelsea Bass came off the bench for 14.
The Longhorns featured nine players who each played at least 17 minutes. Only four were on last year's roster.
"I was just anxious to see how the freshmen were going to fare, because I know basically what I'm going to get from my returners," Goestenkors said. "I was really excited. I felt like everyone gave us good minutes."
Fussell was the only freshman in the starting lineup, and she scored the game's first points with a pull-up jumper, then picked up a charge on Trinity's next offensive possession. Fussell was 7-of-16 shooting and made 7 of 8 from the free throw line.
Ashley Gayle, UT's 6-foot-4 starting post, finished with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting to go along with six rebounds. But Hartung proved herself to be a worthy option off the bench. She was strong on the glass and earned eight offensive boards. Hartung also showed off a jump shot that comfortably extends to the free throw line.
Hartung hit five of her first six field goal attempts and finished the game 9 of 14.
"I think our team was very focused. We had three keys to the game -- run, rebound and reverse the ball," Hartung said. "I just went out there, played my hardest to run the floor and keep up."
POSTGAME NOTES
-Texas shot 58.8% (47-of-80) from the field while holding Trinity to 32.7% (16-of-49).
-The Longhorns dished out 29 assists to 18 turnovers. Ashleigh Fontenette recorded a game-high 10 assists and 17 points ... Fontenette has one career double-double.
-Ashleigh Fontenette, Yvonne Anderson, Chassidy Fussell, Kathleen Nash and Ashley Gayle were Texas' starters in the exhibition contest.
-Freshman post Anne Marie Hartung came off the bench and recorded a double-double with game-highs for points (26) and rebounds (13).
-Six Longhorns notched double-figure scoring: Nash (21), Anderson (20), Fussell (21), Fontenette (17), Hartung (26) and Chelsea Bass (14).
-All nine Longhorns saw at least 15 minutes of playing time.
-Texas outscored Trinity in the paint (76-16), off turnovers (81-9), second-chance points (18-0), fast breaks (56-8) and off the bench (44-23).
