No. 12 Women's Basketball beats Kansas State for sixth-straight win

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)--Kathleen Nash scored a game-high 22 points and No. 12 Texas beat Kansas State 62-41 on Wednesday night.
Nash hit all five of her 3-pointers as the Longhorns shot 75 percent from behind the arc. Cokie Reed added 13 points for Texas (19-6, 8-3 Big 12).
The Longhorns opened on a 12-3 run within the first four minutes of the second half to build a 33-21 advantage. Nash hit two 3-pointers and connected on a lay-up during that spurt, but Kansas State soon crept back into the game. Over the next four minutes, the Wildcats went on a 13-2 burst and trailed the Longhorns 35-34.
Texas extended its lead soon after going on a 13-2 run of its own and took control of the game.
Brittany Chambers finished with 11 points for the Wildcats (12-13, 4-7).
Neither team was able to build a big lead in the first half as Kansas State jumped out to an 8-5 advantage in the game's first eight minutes. After swapping baskets for much of the half, Texas went up 15-12 on Nash's second 3-pointer of the game.
The Wildcats quickly regained the lead after Jalana Childs scored on two consecutive layups.
Reed converted a three-point play with just over three minutes remaining in the half, sinking her free throw after scoring on a contested layup for the Longhorns. Texas didn't score the remainder of the half but still went into the break with a 21-18 lead.
POST-GAME NOTES
-Texas' six-game Big 12 Conference win streak is the longest under head coach Gail Goestenkors.
-UT improved to 11-9 all-time against Kansas State and 7-2 when playing in Austin.

Opening statement: Always happy to come away with a win, especially in the Big 12, any win is a good win. I was worried about this game. K-State is a very dangerous team because they're such a great 3-point shooting team and we were coming off of the road and I was just afraid we wouldn't be up for this game because I don't think their record is indicative of how good they are and how dangerous they are. I thought in the first half we were a little flat on the offensive end, I thought we played good defense but our offense just wasn't clicking so I was very pleased in the second half I thought we played a much more complete game on both ends of the floor.
On Kathleen Nash: Just before the game I had come out a little early and Kat was already out shooting and she was standing in the same spot and she probably made maybe about 30 threes in a row and I just stood there and watched. I pulled AT [Ashleigh Fontenette] aside and said if she's open, please get her the ball because she's on fire, so I was glad for us to be able to find Kat and for her to have those opportunities.
On 3-point defense: Our goal over our last several opponents had been to protect the paint, protect the paint, protect the paint since they weren't really 3-point shooting teams. So this was a different style for us than we had played in a while so this was about protecting the three and we were willing to give up some drives to the basket and some mismatches inside the paint but we wanted to really do a great job protecting against the 3-point shot.
JUNIOR FORWARD KAT NASH
On the team's first half: As coach said, I don't think we were clicking well on offense just because our passes we weren't catching them and we were just really off but our defense really kept us in it so it's always good when you don't have to score that much, you can rely on your defense.
On her 3-pointer performance: I always hope that my shots will go in but in the past few games I don't think I've had as much confidence in my shot because I've missed quite a few, so it's nice to just have a game where I feel more confident.
FRESHMAN POST Cokie Reed
On defense: They're just a good 3-point shooting team so we were switching on ball screens, 1-5, and just to stay down with our hands up, especially when me and AG [Ashley Gayle] were at the point guarding the point guard.

Opening statement: I don't think that I've ever seen a team shoot 73 percent from the floor in a half against Kansas State. That was a great second half offensive performance by Texas. Obviously, it was a tale of two halves. They were very aggressive and got any shot they wanted on the offensive end. (Kathleen) Nash was terrific. I thought they really began to assert themselves in real critical situations early in the half. I thought we played them fairly well until about the 12-minute mark. We just really let the water seep through. We just really got inefficient on both ends of the floor. Shooting 73 percent from the floor, they were a really efficient team against our defense in the second half. I'm disappointed that we weren't able to match their intensity.
On Texas' inside presence: Kathleen (Nash) is versatile. She can cause mismatches inside and out. Cokie (Reed) and Ashley (Gayle), through the course of the second half they stayed aggressive, got good touches and put pressure on our defense. They force you to guard tough inside. That presence makes a big difference to a basketball team like us. Even if they're not scoring, they demand a lot of your attention.
On Kathleen Nash's night: She just was aggressive. We let her kind of get in front of us a lot. She's just a versatile player. She can score from the three-point line, she can score at 15 feet, then the next possession she can post you up or slice-cut you to the rim. She made maximum impact. She played smart and her teammates were smart and got her the ball in mismatch situations. I thought she played a smart and good game for Texas.
