Bevo XIV named Grand Champion, praised for 'docility'

Bevo XIV can now be called by another name -- Grand Champion.
Bevo was recently named Grand Champion Trophy Steer at the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and showmanship seems to be in his lineage. Bevo was a national champion as a two-year-old in 2004, when he was more commonly known as Sunrise Studley.
Studley officially took over as Bevo at the Texas Football game against North Texas on Sep. 4, 2004. In his free time, Bevo lives with his "parents" John T. and Betty Baker at their Sunrise Ranch, northwest of Austin.
"Now that he's Bevo, we don't take him many places to show," Betty Baker said. "Houston invites us to come each year with the understanding that he'll have 24-hour security. Since he was there anyway, we entered him in the Trophy Steer Show."
Bevo, who was named Reserve Champion at the 2008 show, won the senior division before beating the junior champion to be named the Grand Champion Trophy Steer.
Trophy steer judges look for color, confirmation and horn when judging longhorns.
"He looked awesome in the arena, and the judge commented on his docility," Baker said.
