The Texas men's track and field team defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks, 122-76, in the Texas vs. Arkansas Dual Meet on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. The Longhorns won 14 of the 19 events on the day, including all but one on the track. Scoring was done in a 5-3-2-1 format with a maximum of two individuals per team scoring and a 5-3 format in relays.
"We were really happy with how the guys came out and performed today," said head coach Bubba Thornton. "Winning an event like this shows what kind of team you have and I liked how the guys competed today. They raced and weren't just out there running. We also had some solid performances in the field events. This is a good start, but we'll need to build from here as we move forward."
Freshman Keiron Stewart helped the Texas cause by winning both the 110-meter hurdles (13.60) and 400-meter hurdles (51.81) with collegiate-best times. The 13.60 in the 110 hurdles is the third-fastest time in the nation this season. Stewart also sprinted the third leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay team with fellow freshmen Emerson Sanders and Marquise Goodwin. Sophomore Trevante Rhodes anchored the 40.11 finish, Texas' top time in the race this season. Rhodes also won both the 100 meters (10.40) and 200 meters (21.16), his best 200-meter time as a Longhorn.
After missing the Texas Relays, senior All-American Tevan Everett and Goodwin returned to the track. Everett won the 800 meters in a time of 1:50.56 just ahead of twin brother, Tevas who clocked a 1:50.61. Goodwin finished second in the 100 meters in 10.43, a collegiate-best time.
Hayden Baillio finished the day with two first-place finishes. The freshman threw the shot put 60-1.25, a personal best, to win the event. Baillio also claimed first place in the discus with a toss of 173-5 and third place in the hammer throw (156-0).
Texas also got victories in the 400 meters (Andre Thomas, 47.03), 1,500 meters (Patrick Todd, 3:45.46), 5,000 meters (Habben Berhane, 14:32.29), 4x400-meter relay (3:10.65), pole vault (Kenny Greaves, 16-7.50) and triple jump (Emerson Sanders, 47-10).
The Longhorns will return to the track on Friday and Saturday, April 23-24 at the Penn Relays.
