Rowing caps weekend at third session of the Lake Natoma Invitational

GOLDEN RIVER, Calif. -- The Texas Rowing team recorded three second-place finishes in the C finals during the third session of the second-annual Lake Natoma Invitational, Sunday morning. The Longhorns finished second in the C group first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four races.
Texas' first varsity eight crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jacqueline Gorcyca, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Jennifer VanderMaarel, Laurel McCaig, Jelena Zunic, Courtney Nicklas, Meg George and Nancy Arrington completed the race in 6:44.99, trailing Minnesota (6:41.10) and defeating Sacramento State (6:48.02).
The Horns' second varsity eight comprised of coxswain Emma Dirks, stroke Charity McDonald, Callie Mattrisch, Katarina Susac, Anna Thomson, Sally Tunell, Tajana Lovric, Stephanie Matejka and Karli Sheahan clocked a time of 6:59.25, falling to Minnesota (6:53.30) and besting Sacramento State (7:03.53).
UT's first varsity four shell of coxswain Megan Kelly, Colleen Irby, Katrina Cerk, Julia Stevens and Natasia Giles crossed the finish in 7:43.20, losing to Minnesota (7:29.78) and knocking off Sacramento State (7:53.22).
Texas finished third in the tightly contested novice eight grand finale with its crew of coxswain Erin Gamez, stroke Taylor Parker, Madeline Shaw, Callan Wingo, Chelsea Burns, Lyndsey DuBose, Emily Gross, Sarah Pedersen and Jillian Domingue notching a time of 6:55.84. California won the race in 6:48.90, while Washington State (6:54.98) claimed second.
The Horns return to action on Saturday, May 1 at the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla.
