Goodwin wins long jump, Men's Track and Field second at Big 12 Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Freshman Marquise Goodwin won the long jump and Texas scored 34 points on day two of the Big 12 Championships on Saturday. The Longhorns sit in second place heading into the final day of action. Goodwin's win gave the Horns 10 points to go along with 13 points from sophomore Jacob Thormaehlen and freshman Hayden Baillio in the shot put, eight points from sophomore Kenny Greaves and freshman Hayden Clark in the pole vault and three points from freshman Isaac Murphy in the decathlon.
"It was good to see some of the young guys like Marquise and Keiron (Stewart) start to put things together," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "This is one of those meets where we're going to learn a lot about our guys. We'll be able to use these performances to evaluate where we're at so we can continue the improvement and get better."
Goodwin claimed the long jump with a mark of 26-0.75, which moved him into fourth on the national list and tied him for third on UT's all-time performers list. It marked the first time since 2001 that a Texas athlete won the conference title in the long jump. It also marked the first time since 2003 that a Longhorn eclipsed the 26-foot mark.
To open the event, Goodwin posted a leap of 24-9.25. He improved on that in round two and took the lead with a mark of 25-7.50. After fouling on his next two attempts, Goodwin hit the 26-footer to take a commanding lead. He finished off the competition with a foul on his sixth attempt, but that didn't take away from the rookie's first career Big 12 title.
"It feels great," Goodwin said. "We've been dealing with the hamstring stuff for most of the season and I just started feeling really good a couple of weeks ago. I thought I had a chance for some big jumps today. I got off to a good start and on my fourth jump, I hit a big one, but scratched, so I knew it was there. Then, on that fifth attempt, I got the 26-footer. It was a tough competition with so many great jumpers, so it feels really good to be the Big 12 champion."
In the shot put, Thormaehlen used a throw of 59-6.75 to earn second place and eight points for the Horns, while Baillio added five points with a fourth-place finish (58-4). Thormaehlen opened with the 59-6.75 and Baillio notched his best mark on his second attempt. Both were unable to improve due in large part to rainy conditions that had the ring very slick. Of the eight throwers that scored, only one thrower's best mark came after the second round.
The Horns added eight points in the pole vault behind a fourth-place finish from Greaves and a sixth-place finish from Clark. Greaves cleared 17-0.25 on this third attempt after getting over at 16-8.50 on his third try as well. But, Greaves was clean through his first two heights, which gave him the edge on fifth-place finisher Ryan Hays of Kansas, who also cleared 17-0.25. Clark notched first-attempt clearances at 16-2.50 and 16-8.50, but was unable to get over at 17-0.25.
In the decathlon, Murphy finished sixth with 6,355 points. He entered day two in fifth place, but got off to a rough start when he ran around the first hurdle of 110-meter hurdles and was disqualified. After not scoring a point in the hurdles, Murphy fell from fifth to 10th place. But, he battled back and finished second in the discus to score 658 points. Then, Murphy took the event win in the pole vault, clearing 15-9 to score 849 points. With three athletes no heighting, Murphy jumped back into the top eight. He then placed fifth in the javelin, scoring 579 points, and finished off the 10 events by scoring 564 points in the 1,500.
On the track, three Longhorns advanced to Sunday's finals in freshman Keiron Stewart (110m hurdles) and juniors Brian Rhodes-Devey (1,500m) and Andre Thomas (400m). Stewart posted the second-fastest time of the day in the short hurdles with a mark of 13.77. Rhodes-Devey bettered his personal best by almost 10 seconds when he ran a 3:44.48, which was the third-fastest time of the day. Thomas' 46.50 in the quarter was the fourth-fastest time of the day and the second consecutive race that saw him go under 47 seconds.
