No. 5 Men's Tennis overpowers Tulsa, 6-1

TULSA, Okla. -- No. 5 Texas (2-0) captured a tight doubles point and went on to win five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over host Tulsa (2-2) Sunday afternoon at TU's Case Tennis Center.
The Golden Hurricane opened with a win at third doubles, but the Longhorns seized the two remaining matches to take a 1-0 lead after the doubles session. Texas' 25th-ranked tandem of senior Kellen Damico and redshirt freshman David Holiner held on for an 8-6 win at second doubles over Tulsa's Grant Ive and Alastair Barnes. The result at first doubles finished in a tiebreaker, where Texas' fifth-ranked duo of Ed Corrie and Jean Andersen edged Tulsa's 22nd-ranked tandem of Clifford Marsland and Ashley Watling, 8-6.
UT's Andersen staked Texas to a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Tulsa's Marsland at second singles. Texas' 78th-ranked Mladenov pushed the UT cushion to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over the Golden Hurricane's Tristan Jackson. Texas clinched the match's outcome and assumed a 4-0 lead on account of sophomore Ben Chen's 6-4, 6-3 win over Tulsa's Grant Ive at fourth singles.
UT's Damico pushed the Texas lead to 5-0 with a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) win over Tulsa's 89th-ranked Watling at third singles. Tulsa got on the board with a third-set match tiebreak win at sixth singles before Texas closed out the match at first singles, where Texas' Corrie outlasted Tulsa's 44th-ranked Marcelo Arevalo, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2).
Texas resumes play on Saturday, Jan. 22 when it visits Michigan.
