The Longhorns defeated No. 18 Florida, 4-1, on Friday in a match that began outdoors but moved indoors after doubles.
Austin – No. 1 Texas Men's Tennis claimed its second-straight outright SEC regular season championship, doing so in just its second year in the conference, with a 4-1 win over No. 18 Florida on Friday. The match began outdoors at the Texas Tennis Center but moved to the Weller Indoor Tennis Center after doubles due to inclement weather.
"(The team) earned it throughout the season, but especially today," head coach Bruce Berque said. "That was one of the more impressive matches that we've had this year. I think it reminded me a lot of some of the matches we played at the (ITA) National Indoors, because there were a lot of moments that we were in trouble, and we held our nerve and played tough and showed really good competitive spirit. So that was really satisfying to do that in a championship match. That's where we want to be. I still think we've got room for improvement, but there was just a lot of toughness, a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of spirit, and we held our nerve when Florida was playing great tennis against us."
The Longhorns, who are now 21-6 and 12-2 in the SEC, have also earned the top seed in next week's SEC Championship that will be held from April 15-19 in College Station.
Texas secured the doubles point at the Texas Tennis Center with a pair of 6-4 wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The rain then came just after singles started with most courts not having completed a game, however after moving indoors, the Longhorns claimed victories from senior No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1, and freshman No. 32 Kalin Ivanovski at No. 2 for a 3-0 lead. Florida picked up its lone point with a win at No. 5, but freshman No. 109 Abel Forger completed his three-set comeback to clinch. The two unfinished matches at Nos. 3 and 6 were both even in their third sets when play stopped.
In doubles, the No. 26 duo of Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau were first off the court with their 6-4 win over Adhithya Ganesan and Pablo Perez Ramos at No. 2. Gorzny and Marionneau earned the only break in the first game and it held up for the win. Moments later, the No. 39 pair of sophomores Sebastian Eriksson and Oliver Ojakaar registered the only break of their match in the last game in their 6-4 victory over Lorenzo Claverie and Kevin Edengren at No. 3. The remaining match at No. 1 was then even, 5-5, between Ivanovski and Forger and the No. 9 pair of Henry Jefferson and Tanapatt Nirundorn when play stopped.
After a tightly contested first set in singles, Gorzny made quick work of the second set in his 7-5, 6-0 win over No. 103 Ganesan at No. 1. Not long after that, Ivanovski had a similar result in his 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 91 Jeremy Jin at No. 2 for the 3-0 overall lead.
Florida recorded its point as senior Jonah Braswell fell to No. 69 Jefferson at No. 5, leaving three matches that were basically even down the stretch, but Forger emerged with a top-60 win over Perez Ramos, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 4 to send his teammates streaming onto his court.
The two unfinished matches were exactly even when play halted with No. 41 Eriksson having come up just short in a first-set tiebreaker against Claverie, leading to a 6-7 (7), 6-3, 2-2 score at No. 3. Meanwhile, Marionneau had won his first set against Kevin Edengren at No. 6 with that match sitting at 6-4, 4-6, 3-3.
It was also Senior Day for Gorzny and Braswell, who along with last year's National Player of the Year Timo Legout, were honored after the match. Legout has served in a student support role this year.
"I feel so lucky to be part of what's been a terrific culture over the last several years," Berque said. "And each year we have a group of seniors that I'm really sorry to see go. That's a good sign when you when you wish you had another year with these guys, and that's the way I feel about Timo, Seb and Jonah. Jonah just is like a poster child for team spirit and school spirit, and he loves being part of this experience. For Gorzny, it's been really satisfying for me to see him raise his level and become a leader on this team after, three years of Eliot Spizzirri and Timo playing No. 1 and being the No. 1-ranked players in the country. You could easily say we haven't missed a beat at that spot this year, which is pretty incredible. For him to do what he's done this year, it's been a massive lift for us, and there's no way we would be champions in either National Indoors or SEC without him. And Timo is just a special kid. He's with us every match. He's like a fourth coach out there. He's still got his own goals and dreams in tennis, but you couldn't pull him away from one of these dual matches. So as long as he's at Texas and is a student here, he's going to be doing everything he can to help the program. He had one of the historic seasons of anybody who's ever played at Texas last year, and now it's hard to believe, but he's making almost as much of an impact, helping to bring along the younger players as a student coach, even though he can't play right now. So, it's a special group, for sure, and I'm glad we've still got a little more time with them, we'll be missing them for sure after the season."
