AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Longhorns held on and utilized timely runs to defeat a scrappy Southeastern Louisiana Lions squad at the Frank Erwin Center on Monday night. The Longhorns featured three double-digit scorers as they defeated the Lions, 73-65.
Ashleigh Fontenette led the way with 19 points, and Yvonne Anderson added 18 and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Chassidy Fussell scored 15 to also pace the Longhorns.
UT hit just five of its first 18 shots and held an 11-10 lead at the 11:50 mark of the first half. The Longhorns, though, were able to take advantage of their size with seven first-half blocks. UT went into the break with a 31-25 edge, led by Anderson's 10 points.
The Longhorns stretched their lead to 12 with 5:45 remaining in the game, but the Lions would not go away quietly, cutting the lead to five with 2:47 to play after consecutive 3-pointers. The two teams went back and forth until 1:19, when the Lions cut the lead to three on a three-point play by freshman guard Elizabeth Styles.
The Longhorns would prevail though with clutch free throw shooting and closed out the game going 5 of 7 from the line to seal the eight-point victory.
Texas shot 45 percent for the game and blocked nine shots, led by a total of five for senior post Ashley Gayle. Gayle is now tied for UT's all-time career record with 289 blocks. Ellen Bayer set that mark in 1990.
The Longhorns return to action Sunday, Nov. 20 against Alcorn State for a 2 p.m. start at the Frank Erwin Center.
