HONOLULU, Hawai'I -- The No. 24 Texas Women's Basketball team topped No. 22 Virginia 79-53 in the opening game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Showdown Friday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Sophomore guard Chassidy Fussell scored a career-high 30 points on 9-of-16 shooting including a 4-of-9 mark from beyond the arc.
Texas (3-1) rolled easily to a 43-25 halftime lead. Ashleigh Fontenette had 11 points and six assists and Anne Marie Hartung added 10 points and had a game-high eight rebounds for the Longhorns, who held a 40-24 edge on the boards.
Texas led 11-9 when it went on a 13-0 run, and the Longhorns led by as many as 26 points in the first half en route to handing Virginia its first loss of the season.
Ariana Moorer led Virginia (4-1) with 17 points and China Crosby added 12 points. The Cavaliers shot just 31 percent from the field.
UT takes on California Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Central before facing host Hawai'I Sunday evening at 9 p.m.
