AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Ashleigh Fontenette scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half to lead No. 22 Texas past Delaware State 89-35 on Wednesday.
Texas (10-2) opened with an 18-4 run that included 12 straight points and won its fifth straight heading into next Wednesday's Big 12 opener against Kansas. Chassidy Fussell, Yvonne Anderson and Anne Marie Hartung each added 12 points for the Longhorns.
Tasia Bristow scored nine points and Alexis Thornton added eight for Delaware State (3-11), which has lost 11 of 12.
Texas, ranked third in the country in blocked shots, stuffed Delaware State 11 times and turned 35 turnovers by the Lady Hornets into 34 points. The Longhorns also won the rebound battle 52-34 in their final non-conference matchup.

-Texas' 54-point win over Delaware State marked its largest margin of victory since Nov. 16, 2010 when it defeated Northwestern State, 112-53 (+59)

Opening statement: I think this was your typical post-Christmas game, a lot of turnovers from both teams, a little ragged play. But, I am proud of our defensive effort. I thought we worked really hard. We've been trying to improve our defense this entire year from last year, and I think we have. I guess that's the part I was most pleased with. I thought everyone came in and contributed. I'm happy to come away with a win with no injuries. Now, we know it's time for Big 12 play.
On the importance of keeping focused: We have a great will to win and when we're focused, I think we can do anything. We know what we're capable of when our focus is there, when our energy is there. We've had games where we've had a tremendous post-play attack. We've had games where our guards have been excellent. And we've had a few games where we've put it together. The great news is that we are not even close to peaking yet. I think the team is very receptive and working hard and very determined.
SENIOR FORWARD Ashley Gayle
On how the team feels heading into Big 12 play: I just think we've grown a lot during this preseason based on the opponents we've played. A lot of them were ranked. I think it really shows how much we can grow from game-to-game.

On how she felt the team played: I think with the turnover area, we were kind of sloppy with the ball. But, I think our defense is great. We just have to finish with the rebounding.
JUNIOR GUARD Chassidy Fussell
On the win: The biggest thing is that we're always going to stick together through anything. We had a really tough practice the other day and we just came together and got strong. But, on the court, the turnovers and the rebounds...we have to clean that up a little bit.
