AUSTIN, Texas - University of Texas sophomore Keiron Stewart has been named the Big 12 Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. It is the first career honor for Stewart and the first for the Longhorns this season.
Stewart automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship after taking first in the 60m hurdles championship section at the New Balance Collegiate Invite with a nation-leading time of 7.68. The time was just one one-hundredth of a second off of the Texas school record of 7.67 and was the fastest run by a Longhorn since the record was set in 2004. Stewart is the only athlete in the country to break the 7.70 mark in the event this season.
The Longhorns return to action this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12, with split squads at the UNM Don Kirby Invitational (Albuquerque, N.M.) and the Husky Classic (Seattle, Wash.)
