AUSTIN, Texas - Texas-Ex Dimitar Kutrovsky scored one of the more significant wins of his professional career on Wednesday (Aug. 10) in the opening round of an ATP Challenger event in Binghamton, N.Y.
Kutrovsky, currently ranked No. 542 in the ATP world singles rankings, defeated Brazil's Rogerio Dutra De Silva, the world's 111th-ranked player, by a 6-1, 6-2 count. Ranked as high as No. 481 in May, Kutrovsky will take on Australia's Carsten Ball in the tournament's second round on Thursday.
Kutrovsky, who holds UT's record for combined singles and doubles wins (260) and completed his collegiate eligibility in 2010, has taken on a busy summer schedule that included an appearance for his native Bulgaria in the Davis Cup.
Andersen, Zavala claim ITF futures title
Former Longhorns Jean Andersen and Josh Zavala claimed the 16-team doubles draw last week at the ITF Futures event in Decatur, Ill.
The duo defeated the tandem of Ben Rogers and J.P. Smith by a 6-7 (8), 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-8) count in the semifinals before posting a 6-3, 6-4 win over Devin Britton and Bradley Cox in the finals.
Corrie reaches singles finals at ITF futures event
Texas-Ex Ed Corrie reached the finals of the 32-player singles draw last week at an ITF Futures event in London.
Corrie, currently ranked No. 1246 in the world by the ATP, opened the tournament with wins over three opponents - Cheong-Eui Kim, Kevin Botti and James Marsalek - ranked inside the top 1,000 of the ATP singles rankings. Corrie followed in the semifinals with a big win over the 306th-ranked Riccardo Ghedin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, before falling to Jamie Baker in the finals.
Corrie will represent his native England later this month at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.
