No. 1 Men’s Tennis advances to NCAA Tournament second round

The Longhorns swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-0, on Friday to move to the second round for the 13th-straight year.
Austin – No. 1 Texas Men's Tennis advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 sweep over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center on Friday. It marks the 13th-straight year the Longhorns have reached at least the second round where they will next face No. 32 SMU on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
Texas took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 2 and followed with singles victories by freshmen Lucas Marionneau at No. 5 and Mariano Dedura-Palomero at No. 6, along with senior No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1 for the clinch.
During doubles, the combo of sophomores Oliver Ojakaar and Evan Burnett were first off the court with a 6-3 win over Ethan Dasset and Josef Zapletal at No. 3. The No. 21 duo of Gorzny and Marionneau then clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over Mikel Garmendia and Maxime Salesses at No. 2. In the unfinished match at No. 1, freshmen Kalin Ivanovski and Abel Forger led their match, 5-4, against Omar Suarez and Etienne Marty when play stopped.
Marionneau made quick work of his match to start singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Zapletal at No. 5. Just minutes after that, Dedura-Palomero was almost as efficient with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Salesses at No. 6. In an even shorter time following that, Gorzny clinched the overall victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nicholas Niox at No. 1.
The Longhorns held leads in all of the remaining matches, including No. 41 Ivanovski over Suarez, 6-3, 2-1 at No. 2, No. 102 Forger over Marty, 6-5, at No. 3, and senior Jonah Braswell, 6-3, 2-0, over Dasset at No. 4.
