Women's Basketball runs past Missouri, 75-58

AUSTIN, Texas - Chassidy Fussell scored 22 points and Yvonne Anderson added 18 to spur Texas Women's Basketball to a 75-58 victory over the Missouri Tigers on Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center.
The Longhorns scored the game's first 11 points and opened the second half with a 15-2 run to pull away from Missouri. UT never trailed in the game and led by as many as 22 points.
Christine Flores led the Tigers with 12 points and eight rebounds. BreAnna Brock posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Missouri shot 28.8 percent from the field on the night.
UT travels to Texas Tech on Saturday, Jan. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Lubbock.

Opening Statement: Overall, I was really pleased with the way we came out. I thought we were very, very aggressive, both defensively and offensively, attacking the basket. We had some lapses in the first half and squandered the big lead. I was a little frustrated with that at halftime, but the team really responded. I thought we were playing hard in the first half, but we weren't playing smart in the first half. We were giving up threes and they (Missouri) love to shoot threes. Giving up those six threes was a little frustrating. I thought in the second half, the team really came together, took care of business, played aggressively, and really limited their opportunities for the three. I think that really changed the game.
On defensive changes in the second half: We didn't change anything tactically. We didn't change our game. We just played smarter. We were fouling them (Missouri) 90 feet from the basket and putting them on the free throw line. We were supposed to be going over screens on the ball and we went under several times. That allowed them to hit some threes. It was the same game plan, we just executed better in the second half.

On UT's second-half defense: I think it was our little pep talk in the locker room at halftime and our determination to not give them any more threes.
On missing shots near the rim: I get frustrated at times, but you just have to move on to the next possession.

On UT's second-half defense: We started executing our game plan and going over on screens rather than under. Like Cokie said, the pep talk at half really helped a lot.

On pulling away and not letting Missouri get back in the game: It was just the mix of the pep talk and us not wanting to give them any hope. We have had games where we don't put away the opponent. This game we just wanted to put them away. We wanted to have a game where we could have fun and not have to sweat it to the last minute. We just started doing the little things that Coach (Goestenkors) was telling us to do. That's what got us the win.
On UT's second-half performance: It just shows that we can do it if we commit to it, which I'm sure the coaches love. If we play tough defense, we're going to score. If we execute our plays, we're going to score. Just doing the little things is really important. This was big because it gives us a little momentum going into Lubbock, where it's going to be really tough to play.

MISSOURI HEAD COACH ROBIN PINGETON
On whether Texas' defense or Missouri's poor shooting decided the game: I think it was a little bit of both. We are a growing program and we are just having growing pains right now. We are trying to figure out how to put 40 minutes together. Out of the gates, we dug ourselves a little bit of a hole. I thought we responded well in the second part of the first half. We came out of halftime and missed a lay-up and then missed two free throws. It was really back-and-forth. If you can convert on a couple of those, I think it changes the game a little bit from a pressure standpoint. I thought we had some open looks, but give Texas credit. I think they played awfully good defense, too.
On Texas making defensive adjustments after the first half: I think it was pretty consistent. I didn't notice a change defensively. I still felt like we had some open looks. We were just not able to stick them. In the post, I thought they did a real nice job [defensively]. I thought they did it consistently in the first half and the second half, just playing physical inside and making it hard for our post players to get angles to the basket. I think that was pretty consistent in both halves.

SENIOR FORWARD BreAnna BROCK
On why she struggled with shooting in the post: Like Coach (Pingeton) said, their defense is very consistent. I feel like I need to have a better shot selection. My teammates were doing their job by getting the ball in to me, but I have to kick it out to them sometimes too. That's on me.
