Texas Quotes
Head coach Gail Goestenkors
Opening statement: Frustrated. I think it started with Yvonne Anderson getting those quick fouls. She knows she is a senior, she is our point guard and we need her on the floor. We just don't have a lot of depth at that guard position. I think we panicked a bit and took a lot of quick shots. We just lost our assignments on defense. I thought Ashley Gayle did a great job on Carolyn Davis, especially in the first half. Their guards, they just penetrated us. I thought their guards stepped up and played really well. I am proud that we came back, but when you put yourself 23 down with 10 minutes left, it makes it difficult. That is something that we need to build upon and know that if we play 40 minutes like that, we might have a different outcome.
On the team's effort not being there: That's what it felt like to me. Watching it, I felt like the passion, the intensity, the focus that you need to play just didn't seem to me like it was there early on. I saw it the last 10 minutes, and that's who we need to be and play like for 40 minutes.
Senior G Ashleigh Fontenette
On lesson learned tonight: Just that we have to get off to a good start. It is hard to come back in this league. We have been there many times, and we are just going to have to learn from this and get better.
Kansas Quotes
Head coach Bonnie Henrickson
Opening Statement: I thought we were really good early. Out of the locker room and starting the game we had great poise and composure, toughness, and unselfishness, which we have been all year. We grew the lead, and we knew they were going to make a run. Their run came at the eight-minute mark, but we expected it and anticipated it coming out of the lockerroom after halftime. It was important for us to answer to it and limit their run. Texas got aggressive, and we became kind of passive and I'll take the blame for that. We didn't want a lot of shots, we wanted to eat the clock. They forced turnovers and made shots and thank goodness the game wasn't 41 minutes, it was only 40. We were able to regain a little poise and composure and knock down some free throws to put it to out of reach. We've got to get better at shooting free throws. I give Texas credit for making a run and making a game of it in the end.
Junior guard Monica Engelman
On being close to home: Well, really it was our first game in the Big 12, and I knew we needed to come out strong and aggressive. That was the gameplan between my teammates and I, and we just wanted to get the first win.
On teamwork: We all wanted to be aggressive and move without the ball and play our way. Us staying aggressive helped us out a lot. Moving without the ball, getting stops, and scoring points in transition really helped us get the win.
