CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 14 Texas (8-3) claimed the doubles point and added singles wins from Sudanwa Sitaram, Daniel Whitehead and Lloyd Glasspool in a 4-2 victory over No. 16 Auburn (7-2) late Sunday in the final round of consolation play at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Texas, who sealed its win over the Tigers after midnight Eastern time, now boasts four victories over ITA top-20 opponents this season. The Horns finish their stint at the event with a 2-1 mark after falling to third-seeded Ohio State on Friday and defeating 11th-ranked Texas A&M on Saturday.
Texas secured the doubles point with victories at the third and second doubles positions. Sitaram and Whitehead led off with an 8-3 win at the third slot over the Tigers' Dennis Lengsfeld and Lucas Lopasso. The Longhorns clinched the doubles point at the second slot, where junior Chris Camillone and sophomore David Holiner held off Auburn's Andy Mies and Lukas Ollert, 8-6. The remaining match at first doubles was suspended.
Auburn evened the match at fifth singles, where Ollert posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over UT's Camillone. The Longhorns reclaimed the lead at third singles, where UT's Sitaram notched a 6-2, 7-6 win over Dan Cochrane. Texas pushed the lead to 3-1 when the 69th-ranked Whitehead posted a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over Auburn's Alex Stamchev at second singles.
Auburn closed the gap to 3-2 behind a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win from Lopasso over UT's Holiner at sixth singles, but Glasspool, a first-semester freshman, closed out the match with a win at fourth singles, where he outlasted Auburn's Lengsfeld, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. The remaining match at first singles, with UT's Hess-Olesen one game away from a win over Auburn's 23rd-ranked Mies, was suspended given that Texas had clinched the team victory.
Texas returns home next weekend and will host UT Arlington and UTSA on Saturday, Feb. 25.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
"Auburn is a good team who has had some good results this season. We knew it would be a real test tonight. We played well in the doubles matches again, and the singles matches were battles. There were a lot of close matches. We won a couple of second-set tiebreakers (at Nos. 1 and 4 singles). It was just a really good team effort. We learned a lot about ourselves this week and what we need to work on. We have a chance to be a pretty good team."
