CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 2 Virginia (2-0) swept the doubles point and the six singles matches to claim a 7-0 victory over No. 15 Texas (4-1) Friday evening at The University of Virginia's Boar's Head Sports Club.
"I did see some good things, but Virginia is a really powerful team indoors and is very difficult to beat at their place," UT head coach Michael Center said. "We got a little overpowered in doubles for the first time this season."
Virginia swept the doubles session to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers' Alex Domijan and Steven Rooda opened with an 8-1 win at second doubles over the Horns' David Holiner and Daniel Whitehead. UVA clinched the doubles point at first doubles, where Drew Courtney and Jarmere Jenkins knocked off UT's Soren Hess-Olesen and Alex Hilliard by an 8-3 count. Virginia finished off the sweep at third doubles, where Mitchell Frank and Julen Uriguen dealt Texas' Chris Camillone and Jacoby Lewis an 8-4 defeat.
Virginia pushed its lead to 2-0 when Domijan posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Whitehead at second singles. The Cavaliers took a 3-0 lead at first singles, where the 11th-ranked Jenkins toppled UT's Hess-Olesen, 6-2, 6-2. Virginia clinched the match at sixth singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win from Philippe Oudshoorn over UT's Lewis.
UT's Camillone challenged UVA's 57th-ranked Justin Shane at fifth singles before falling by a 6-4, 6-4 count. Texas sophomore Sudanwa Sitaram dropped the first set to Virginia's top-ranked Frank, 6-2 but recovered to take the second set, 6-3. The pair decided the match in a third-set match tiebreak, where Frank prevailed, 10-3 to give Virginia a 6-0 lead. Texas freshman Lloyd Glasspool took the first set off of UVA's Courtney at fourth singles, but Courtney prolonged the match by winning a second-set tiebreaker. Glasspool and Courtney went to a tiebreaker in the third set, where Courtney prevailed, 8-6.
"Sudanwa (Sitaram) had a chance to beat the No. 1 player in the country, and Lloyd (Glasspool) served for the match and had a couple of match points in the third-set tiebreaker," Center added. "We did some good things, but we have a lot to learn. I give Virginia a lot of credit. They were just too good for us tonight. I'm encouraged by some of those good things, and I'm looking forward to playing again on Sunday."
Texas resumes competition on Sunday when it visits No. 17 North Carolina. First serve is set for 11 a.m. Central at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
