AUSTIN, Texas -- Nebraska (24-3) kicked off the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center with a 4-0 sweep of North Texas (18-7).
Nebraska took an early 1-0 lead over North Texas by claiming the lone doubles point. Nebraska's tandem of Izabella Zgierska and Janine Weinreich dominated at the third doubles slot, posting an 8-1 win over North Texas's Franziska Sprinkmeyer and Paula Dinuta. Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt clinched the doubles point for the Cornhuskers with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Nebraska won first sets on five-of-six singles courts, and assumed a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 victory by Weinreich at No. 5 singles. Weatherholt added another point for the Cornhuskers with her 6-2, 6-2 win in the first singles match, extending Nebraska's lead to 3-0.
Stefanie Weinstein clinched the victory for Nebraska with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of the Mean Green's Barbora Vykydalova at No. 4 singles.
Nebraska advances to the second round and will face the winner of today's first round match between 11th-seeded Texas and Wichita State. Tomorrow's match will be played at 1 p.m. CT, as the two teams battle for the right to advance to the NCAA round of 16 next week at the University of Georgia.
