DALLAS -- Marquise Goodwin was named a semifinalist Thursday for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes the best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
The senior was one of 147 candidates selected by the The National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame. Those candidates are also eligible for the 2012 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
Goodwin has been a standout football player and world-class track and field performer during his Texas career.
He has played in 40 career football games, including 18 starts at wide receiver. He is averaging a team-high 25.0 yards per catch this season and needs one more reception to reach 100 in his career. He is also an excellent return specialist, having has amassed 2,009 career all-purpose yards, including 706 on kickoff returns.
Goodwin finished 10th in the long jump at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The two-time NCAA Outdoor long jump champion, reached the Olympics by winning the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
He leapt a career-best 8.33m (27-4.00) on the final attempt at the event to earn a spot on the Olympic Team. Goodwin's Trials victory followed his impressive junior campaign at Texas in which he won the NCAA Outdoor title with a then personal-best mark of 8.23m (27-0).
Goodwin was the first collegian to win both the Olympic Trials and the NCAA Outdoors long jump competition in the same year since 1960. He was also the first-ever Longhorn to reach the long jump final at the Olympics.

The Awards Committee will select up to 16 recipients for the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, and the results will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 25. Each recipient will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and they will vie as finalists for the Campbell Trophy.
