TULSA, Okla. - No. 23 Texas men's tennis improved to 3-0 after defeating No. 17 Tulsa, 4-3, on Sunday at Case Tennis Center. It is the Longhorns' second win over a top 25 team in two days, also defeating No. 25 Washington on Saturday.
Sunday's dual came down to the last singles match between No. 43 Daniel Whitehead and No. 69 Alejandro Espejo with team points tied, 3-3. Whitehead lost the first set in the match, only to rally to a 6-4 win in the second and a 7-5 win in the third to clinch the team win for the Longhorns.
"To have Daniel our there with the match on the line is a comforting feeling," head coach Michael Center said. "He has been there so many times and once again he came through for us."
Tulsa earned the team point in doubles by winning two of the three matches. The Longhorns closed the dual by winning three of the last four singles matches, including Whitehead's clinching victory.
"It was a great college tennis match today to cap off a great weekend," Center said. "We got to see great examples of our strengths and weaknesses. I thought the guys really fought hard again today and came up big."
Lloyd Glasspool, Nick Naumann and Whitehead all improved to 3-0 in singles competition during the dual match season with wins on Sunday. No. 31 Soren Hess-Olesen picked up his first win of the season after recovering from injury, defeating No. 34 Japie De Klerk in two sets.
Texas travels to Lexington, Ky., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend starting Friday, Jan. 25 against No. 39 South Carolina. No. 9 Kentucky and No. 52 Michigan State will also compete in Lexington - one of 15 men's ITA Kick-Off sites around the country.
