FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Joe Stilin broke the school record in the mile, Keiron Stewart finished third in the 60-meter hurdles and newcomer Clint Harris collected a third-place showing in the weight throw Saturday to lead the 11th-ranked Men's Track and Field team to a fifth-place finish in the Razorback Team Invitational.
Stilin, in his first season of competition with the Longhorns, finished fourth in an extremely deep invitational mile field in a time of 3:58.66, breaking Leo Manzano's mark of 3:58.78 set while winning the 2007 Big 12 Championship.
The first six finishers in the event now own the top six times in the nation this season. Patrick Casey of Oklahoma won the race in 3:56.28. Thomas Farrell (3:58.20) and Kirubel Erassa (3:58.24) of Oklahoma State just edged Stilin, who ran the final leg of Friday night's distance medley relay unit that posted the top time in the nation this season (9:31.82).
"That was nice to see Stilin get the school record in the mile. That's a pretty good one to get," head coach Bubba Thornton said of breaking Olympian Manzano's mark.
Stewart registered the second-best time in both Friday's prelims (7.74) and Saturday's semis (7.79) of the 60-meter hurdles. He went to clock a 7.85 in the finals to earn six points for the Longhorns who tallied 58.5 in the two-day event.
Top-ranked Arkansas won meet with 124 points and No. 3 Florida was second with 79.5. Nebraska posted 70 and Georgia had 63. Baylor and No. 6 LSU were tied for sixth with 56 points.
Harris, a junior transfer from Stephen F Austin who joined the team this semester, won his flight of the weight throw with a toss of 60-07.75 (18.48m) and earned six points for his third-place finish.
Texas also received scoring Saturday from Ryan Dohner, Jake Wohlford and the 4x400-meter relay unit.
Dohner finished fifth in the invitational 3,000 meters in 8:01.20, the sixth-fastest time in the country this year and just off his career-best of 8:00.24, which ranks third on the school's all-time performance list.
Wohlford was sixth in the heptathlon with 5,164 points, just off his career-best of 5,178 posted at last year's Big 12 Championships. He moved up from eighth after the opening day thanks mostly to his 8.12 in the 60-meter hurdles, the second-fastest time of the event.
Josh Brudnick, Kyle Thompson, Stewart and Zack Bilderback posted a time of 3:14.03 in the 4x400 to finish fifth. Florida won in a nation's-best time of 3:05.93.
"We had a good weekend," Thornton said of the last two days at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center. "We posted the top DMR time in the country, Hayden Baillio won the shot put, Clint Harris did a nice job in the weight throw and Ryan Dohner just missed a school record in the 3,000. Good things happened across the board, but we're not satisfied. We know there's lots of room for improvement."
The Longhorns have two more weekends of competition before the Big 12 Indoor Championships (Feb. 22-23 in Ames, Iowa). They will head to New York on Friday for the two-day New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
