Ames, Iowa -- The Texas Women's Basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to force its first overtime game of the season, but dropped a 73-65 decision to Iowa State in the Big 12 opener on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Longhorns recovered from an early 12-point deficit and led for much of the second half, but were hampered by foul trouble down the stretch.
Chassidy Fussell, Ashley Roberts, Cokie Reed and Nneka Enemkpaliall reached double figures for Texas (7-5, 0-1 Big 12) with Fussell, Roberts and Reed all putting down 15 and Enemkpali adding 12. Roberts finished with a career-high four three-pointers and Fussell matched her career-high in steals while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
It was all Iowa State early in the first half as the Cyclones held a 16-4 lead with nine minutes remaining in the period. Texas then embarked on an impressive 15-2 run, sparked by two Roberts three-pointers, to grab the lead at 19-18. Roberts would tack on a third before the end of the half and UT headed to the locker room down only one.
Texas started the second half on a 5-0 run but put ISU in the bonus within the first seven minutes of play. After briefly surrendering the lead, the Longhorns went up 34-33 with just over 13 minutes left. UT would lead by as many as six over a span of more than 11 minutes until the Cyclones' Anna Prins made a three-pointer to give Iowa State a 54-53 advantage. Texas kept it close and Chassidy Fussell sank a trey of her own with less than 10 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.
In extra time, Iowa State went ahead on its first possession and the Longhorns were only able to tie it twice as the Cyclones held on from the free throw line in the final minute.
Prins and Chelsea Poppens led the way for ISU with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
UT returns to action in its Big 12 home opener against Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Frank Erwin Center. Tipoff is set for 12:30 p.m. Central and the game will be broadcast nationally on FSN.
