ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of Texas Women's Basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season following a 67-52 victory on the road Tuesday night against the University of New Mexico. Nneka Enemkpali led all scorers with 19 points on 9-12 shooting to propel the Horns past the Lobos for their third straight win. Texas leads the all-time series 4-3.
Both teams started the game slow, combining for 17 missed shots in the first seven minutes. However, the Horns were able to pull away after the second media timeout, fueled by balanced team scoring. Seven different Longhorns scored in the first half, led by Enemkpali's 11 first-half points on 5-of-6 shooting.
The Horns closed the first half on an 11-2 run over the last five minutes to lead 30-18 at halftime.
Texas opened up the second half on an 11-5 run behind two quick layups by Enemkpali in response to two jumpers from New Mexico's Antiesha Brown. Texas was able to increase its lead to 19 midway through the second half before New Mexico responded with a 10-2 run to close the gap to 11.
The Lobos never came within 11 points of the Horns for the remainder of the game. Empress Davenport fueled UT's second-half scoring surge on 5-of-6 shooting to score a season-high 12 points. Imani McGee-Stafford and Krystle Henderson each chipped in eight points.
Texas dominated inside, scoring 42 points in the paint compared to New Mexico's 14, and posted a 44-35 rebounding advantage.
New Mexico had two double-figure scorers in Brown and Bryce Owens. Brown scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed four rebounds in 25 minutes to lead the Lobos.
The Horns are back in action Saturday, Nov. 23, against the No. 6 Stanford Cardinal at 12 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center.
