Longhorns place 14 on 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team

Texas had seven first-team members and 14 overall
IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference on Thursday announced its 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team and The University of Texas had 14 honorees, including seven on the first team.
The first-team selections included junior DS Nate Boyer, senior WR Lane Fife, senior DB Devin Huffines, senior LB Shawn Izadi, senior QB Case McCoy, sophomore TE M.J. McFarland and senior OG/C Garrett Porter.
It marks the fourth-straight year Porter has earned first-team honors. McCoy did so for the third-straight year, while Boyer did it for the second time in a row.
The second team included redshirt-freshman S Adrian Colbert, sophomore OG Taylor Doyle, redshirt-freshman DT Alex Norman, junior WR Jaxon Shipley, senior PK Grant Sirgo, junior TE Chris Terry and senior WR Michael Wheeler.
Texas has led the conference in both total selections and first-team members in five of the last eight years. During that span, the Longhorns have had 158 total honorees with 104 on the first team, both of which lead the Big 12. The next closest in both categories is Kansas with 124 total and 81 on the first team.
First-team members have maintained a grade-point average of 3.20 or higher while the second team consists of those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.00 or higher either cumulative or for the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
