While at UT, Ford was an All-American and the winner of the 2003 Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award as the nation's top collegiate basketball player. He also led the Horns to their first Final Four appearance since 1947. In his freshman year at UT, Ford was named National Freshman of the Year and was the first freshman in NCAA history to lead the nation in assists. Ford still holds the top two single-season assist marks in school history. After his sophomore season he was selected eighth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2003 NBA Draft. On Feb. 8, 2004 he became the first UT basketball player to have his number retired.
