AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Women's Basketball head coach Karen Aston announced on Monday the signing of point guard Krystle Henderson (Trinity Valley Community College) to a National Letter of Intent. Henderson will join the Longhorns for the 2013-14 season.
"We are absolutely thrilled with the addition of Krystle to our family," Aston said. "Above all, she is a first-class young woman and student. Secondly, she will add leadership, maturity and immediate depth to our team at the point guard position. Krystle brings a prideful and victorious attitude with her to the Forty Acres. A product of Dallas Skyline and Trinity Valley, Krystle understands the traditions, commitment and dedication within winning programs."
A Dallas native, Henderson graduated in 2010 from Dallas Skyline HS and was a 2010 McDonald's High School All-America team nominee. During her senior campaign, Henderson helped Skyline to a 31-2 record, a No. 2 state ranking and a listing in the USA Today Super 25 Girl's Basketball Rankings before signing to play for Wichita State.
"I am very happy for Krystle and her family," Dallas Skyline head coach Cassandra McCurdy said. "For her to be able to continue her basketball career at The University of Texas speaks volumes. I am so proud of her and I look forward to watching her continue her collegiate career."
Henderson transferred to Trinity Valley following her freshman campaign with the Shockers and helped the Lady Cardinals to a 36-1 season, capped off with the school's second consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association national championship. In the championship game, the 5-5 point guard exceeded her season average of 10.7 points per game with 14 points and was named to the 2013 NJCAA All-Tournament team for her efforts, as Trinity Valley defeated Central Arizona for the school's seventh national title.
"The University of Texas, Coach Aston and the Longhorns' Women's Basketball program are getting a special one," Trinity Valley head coach Elena Lovato said. "Krystle Henderson exemplifies a strong commitment to core values both on-and-off the court - kudos to her parents Pam and Winfred Henderson for raising an amazing kid with great morals. As my point guard this year, she naturally established herself as a leader and team captain because she was willing to invest extra time with each player. Krystle inspired, motivated and challenged her teammates daily. Her work ethic and heart come second to no one. She acts with purpose, direction, enthusiasm and commitment. Today the Longhorn family is not just signing a point guard, they are receiving a true blessing - a great kid who will help Coach Aston create an amazing culture in Austin."
Last season Henderson averaged 4.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game en route to earning All-Region XIV First Team honors.
