Austin -- Former Longhorns DT Brandon Moore has signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers, the team announced on Sunday.
"I am very excited," said Moore about his signing. "I've dreamed about being in the NFL ever since I was little, and now I get my opportunity. Now that I got a shot, I am going to do my best to make the most of it. I had some other teams that were interested, but the opportunity to play really pushed me towards San Diego. Looking at the depth chart and their scheme, I think I have a good chance to come in there and contribute and be successful.
"I always told myself if I work hard, one day I could get a chance to be [in the NFL]. Now that has happened. I got my chance. I am really excited, and I am really happy. I am trying to keep everything normal, keep working out, and keep eating right to make sure I am ready. Because I am a professional now."
"Brandon did a great job for us inside," said Texas head coach Mack Brown. "He is 6'6", 335 pounds. He can move his feet, and he is very physical. He has played in some big ball games. Brandon is a guy that is so hard to find right now. We will really miss him because he is such a big-body type inside."
Moore played one season at Texas after transferring from East Mississippi Community College. He earned MACJC All-State North First-Team honors in 2011 after helping to lead EMCC to a 12-0 record and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship. Moore started his college career at Alabama where he played under current Longhorns defensive tackles coach Bo Davis.
Moore played in 12 games at defensive tackle in 2012, including five starts. He was fourth on the team in tackles for loss (8) and tied for third in QB pressures (6). Moore had a career-high five tackles, including three TFL and one sack, one breakup pass, and one QB pressure vs. Oklahoma and was named the defensive player of the game by the coaching staff.
