NORMAN, Okla. - No. 16 Texas men's tennis lost to No. 11 Oklahoma, 5-2, to open the Big 12 Conference season on Friday night at Headington Family Tennis Pavilion.
The Longhorns (12-6) now lead the all-time series with the Sooners, 22-5. Four of UT's five losses have come against teams ranked in the top 11 of the ITA Rankings.
Oklahoma (14-5) won all three doubles matches by just two points or less to earn the doubles team point. The point was decided at the No. 1 position as 29th-ranked Dane Webb and Costin Paval edged UT's 23rd-ranked team of Chris Camillone and David Holiner, 8-6.
"In doubles, we were up at break on all three courts at one point and didn't finish that off and Oklahoma started putting pressure on us," head coach Michael Center said. "We have to do a better job of finishing off these opportunities. Oklahoma is a good team and they played a good match but I feel like we can still play better, so we have to regroup and play better on Sunday."
Texas lost the first two matches of singles play at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in straight sets. No. 58 Søren Hess-Olesen fell to No. 30 Costin Paval (7-6[2], 6-1) on the first line and Lloyd Glasspool lost to No. 51 Guillermo Alcorta (6-4, 6-2) on the second line.
Freshman Nick Naumann was the third singles match to finish, improving to 11-3 during dual match play with a straight set win over Peerakit Siributwong (6-4, 6-2) in the No. 5 position. Naumann's win put UT on the board, 3-1.
"Nick is doing a great job, he is competing very well and using his athleticism to his advantage," Center said. "He continues to go out there and play with a pretty consistent level. That was a nice win results for him because we (UT) have never beaten Siributwong before."
Senior Daniel Whitehead has four match-clinching singles wins this season, but was on the opposite end of favor on Friday as No. 61 Dane Webb rallied to defeat Whitehead in three sets to clinch the win for the Sooners.
Junior Sudanwa Sitaram saw a seven-match singles winning streak come to an end after falling in three sets to Axel Alvarez Llamas in No. 4 singles (6-1, 5-7, 6-2).
Junior David Holiner recovered from a first-set loss to Nick Papac in No. 6 singles by winning the last match of the night in three sets, including an 8-point tiebreaker in the third. It was Holiner's fourth singles win in the last five matches while improving to 5-5 in dual match play.
The Longhorns face Oklahoma State on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in Stillwater, Okla.
