EUGENE, Ore. - Two days at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and a pair of national titles for the eighth-ranked Texas Longhorns.
One day after Ryan Crouser captured the second shot-put title in school history, Johannes Hock secured the second decathlon crown in UT history Thursday evening, the conclusion of a grueling two-day event at Hayward Field.
Hock won a back-and-forth event with 8,267 points, the ninth-best total in collegiate history. He became just the second freshman to win the event at the national meet (Tito Steiner of BYU, 1977), according to records supplied by Track and Field News.
Teammate Isaac Murphy was not far behind. He finished fourth with a career-best total of 8,086.
Hock and Murphy combined for 15 points and with Craig Lutz scoring another six with an impressive third-place finish in the 10,000 meters, the Longhorns have a meet-best 31 points after six scored events in the four-day meet which concludes Saturday.
Hock, in third heading into the second day of the decathlon, held off Washington's Jeremy Taiwo, who collected a career-high 8,239 points. Hock wasn't far off his career-best total of 8,293, posted at last month's Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas.
While Hock cruised to the victory at the Big 12 meet, this win wasn't secured until he crossed the finish line of the 1,500 meters, the final event, in a personal-best 4 minutes, 37.90 seconds. That time placed 11th in the field, but was good enough to hold off Taiwo, who clocked a 4:16.34.
"It got down to Texas Fight," head coach Bubba Thornton said of the 1,500 meters. "Johannes had to be within 24 seconds (of Taiwo), which is the difference between both of the guys PRs. He got the job done. It was a great athletic accomplishment."
The normally low-key Hock took the win in stride, but Olympic silver medalist Trey Hardee is the only other Longhorn to win the NCAA decathlon title (2005).
Hock took over first place after posting the top mark in event No. 7, the discus, with a toss of 166 feet (50.61m), though that was off his personal-best of 176-8 (53.85m) set at the 2013 Big 12 meet.
He went on to post a decathlon career-best in the pole vault with a clearance of 15-9 (4.80m) and led Taiwo by 171 points heading into the 1,500 meters.
"The sprints were definitely the highs," Hock said. "I had a big-time 100m PR. The hurdles went well. I was struggling in the throws, which is uncommon for me. It's not always that everything works out. There were some ups and downs over the two days. I was just trying to finish it up and win the title."
Murphy started Thursday in fifth and moved up to as high as third. He matched his decathlon career-best of 16 3/4 (4.90m) in the pole vault and had a career-best time of 14.34w in the 110-meter hurdles.
"I thought I had solid marks all the way through the meet," Murphy said. "I just came out and did what I had to do and had a good meet."
This was Murphy's final competition as a Longhorn.
"It just feels good to be apart of this team," Murphy said. "We have a good group of guys here. I'm going to miss it."
Lutz didn't appear to be the 21st seed in the 24-man 10,000-meter field. On an unseasonably warm Oregon evening, he stayed with the leaders early before falling back with the second pack.
"I realized the end of my season was closing in and if I didn't do something about it I wasn't going to take anything from this outdoor season," Lutz said. "So I started moving and that Texas heat looked like it was starting to affect a lot of people."
Lutz crossed the finish line in 29:41.97. Favorite Lawi Lalang of Arizona won in 29:29.65.
For Lutz it was the second-best finish in school history in the 10K at the NCAA meet. Kamiel Maase was second in 1995.
Junior Ryan Dohner, who was seventh in this race last season and was a key cog in winning the 2013 Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor titles, clocked a time of 31:08.10 and finished 23rd.
Senior Patrick McGregor will have chance to earn points at the NCAAs for the first time. He finished fifth (3:44.15) in his semifinal heat of the 1,500m and advanced to Saturday's final.
Keiron Stewart, a five-time first team All-American, had a disappointing end to his stellar career.
The senior has been battling a hamstring injury most of the outdoor season and that ailment resurfaced in Thursday's the 110-meter semifinals.
He came up lame after the second hurdle and was never really able to generate any speed after that. He finished in an un-Stewart-like time of 15.58.
"It wasn't feeling well but I just had to try," said Stewart who holds school records in both the 60- and 110-meter hurdles.
Stewart had only competed in one race since the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in March. He qualified for the national meet during last month's NCAA West Preliminary Round.
"It's been a good four years so I can't complain," Stewart said. "I'd rather it be a fairy-tale ending but sometimes it's not that way."
This was Stewart's seventh appearance at an NCAA Championship meet. He finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2013 NCAA Indoor meet.
"Some great things have happened this year from graduating last month to having mother come to see me (from Jamaica) for the first time and winning two Big 12 Championships," Stewart said. "So I can't really complain."
Crouser, Blake Jacobsson and Clint Harris will compete in the discus on Friday.
Notes:
- The Longhorns have scored twice in the decathlon at one other NCAA meet. Trey Hardee, who holds the collegiate record in the event, won the 2005 NCAA title and Donovan Kilmartin was fourth.
