EUGENE, Ore. - The Texas Longhorns had 15 qualifiers, the third-most in the nation, for the four-day NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but only three were in action Friday, all in the discus.
Ryan Crouser, who captured the shot put crown Wednesday, followed that performance with an eighth-place finish in the discus. His toss of 194 feet, 3 inches (59.21m) earned the eighth-ranked Longhorns one point on day three of the meet.
Texas and No. 7 USC are tied for first with 32 points in the team standings after 13 events. Second-ranked Arkansas is third with 30.5.
Crouser was the favorite in the shot put, but was ranked No. 12 in the nation in the discus during the regular season with a toss of 194 feet, 6 inches (59.28m) at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Despite that position, he was hoping to put a few more points on the board.
"It was a frustrating day all-around." Crouser said. "We had three guys in the event and hoping for some more points to help the team, but it didn't go as planned."
However, Crouser did come through when he needed a mark in the first round. During the shot put, Crouser fouled on his first two attempts and was in danger of not qualifying for the finals. But his toss of 66-7 3/4 easily put him in the finals and that mark stood up, giving him the second shot put title in school history.
His first two attempts in the discus were legal, but would not have advanced him to the nine-man finals.
"I needed that third throw to make finals," Crouser said. "I came through in the clutch so that was good. I threw close to my season PR."
He was seventh heading into the finals, but did not improve on his last three attempts.
"I felt good through the ring in the final three throws, just the flight of the discus wasn't there for me," Crouser said.
The sophomore had a chance to compete in his home state this week at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. His hometown of Boring is just two hours north of Eugene.
"Overall, it was a great experience to come back and compete in front of family and friends this week," Crouser said. "The fans are still pretty supportive even though I went to Texas. Some of my family haven't seen me throw in a Texas uniform so it was nice for them to get that chance."
The Longhorns were the only school with three entries in the 24-man discus field.
However, Blake Jakobsson and Clint Harris did not have their best days.
Jakobsson fouled on his three attempts and Harris's best mark was 173-5 (52.87m), which kept him out of the finals and in 23rd place. They both have thrown more than 188 feet.
Crouser was one of three athletes to score in both the discus and shot put, joining Chad Wright of Nebraska and Stephen Mozia of Cornell. Julian Wruck of UCLA won the discus with a toss of 213-1 (64.93m).
Jakobsson's father Oskar was the only other Longhorn to score in both events at the NCAA meet. He did it three times (1980, 1982, 1983). Crouser was fourth in the discus at last year's NCAA meet.
Texas already has its highest point total at the NCAA Outdoor meet since finishing fourth in 2008 with 35.
The Longhorns, hoping for a top-five finish, have one final chance to score. Patrick McGregor is one of 12 finalists in the 1,500 meters. That race with take place at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the final day of the meet.
Meet Notes:
->Ryan Crouser won the second shot put title in the history of the Texas men's program on Wednesday. Dana LeDuc captured the shot put in 1976.
- This was the fourth consecutive year in which the Longhorns scored in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Hayden Baillio was sixth in 2010 and fourth in 2011. Jacob Thormaehlen was seventh last year.
* Johannes Hock's decathlon total (8,267) was not only the ninth-best mark in collegiate history, but also third in school annals. Hardee set the collegiate record (8,465) at the 2006 Texas Relays. Hock's total of 8,293 at the 2013 Big 12 meet ranks seventh all-time in college and second on the UT list. Isaac Murphy's total ranks fourth in school history (8,086). Murphy also has the fifth-best mark, totaling 8,067 at the 2012 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
- The Longhorns have scored twice in the decathlon at one other NCAA meet. Trey Hardee won the 2005 NCAA title and Donovan Kilmartin was fourth.
- This year's decathlon field may have been the deepest in NCAA history. Six athletes scored more than 8,000 points for the first time. The previous high was four in 1992.
- This the fifth time in school history the Longhorns have won multiple outdoor individual titles in the same season - Dag Wennlund (javelin), Eric Metcalf (long jump) and James Lott (long jump) in 1986; Jacob Davis (pole vault) and Mark Boswell (high jump) in 1999; Trey Hardee (pole vault) and Leo Manzano (1,500 meters) in 2005; Jacob Hernandez (800 meters), Leo Manzano (1,500 meters) and Maston Wallace (pole vault) in 2008.
- Craig Lutz's third-place finish in Thursday's 10,000 meters was the second-best finish in school history. Kamiel Maase was second in 1995. Lutz was the fifth Texas athlete to score in the 10,000 meters at the NCAAs. Ryan Dohner was seventh last season. Current Texas women's assistant coach Steve Sisson was fifth in 1993. Harry Green scored three times. He was seventh in 1986, sixth in 1988 and fifth in 1989.
