EUGENE, Ore. - The final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships consisted mostly of scoreboard watching for Texas.
The Longhorns entered Saturday tied for first with USC, with each tallying 32 points over the first three days of the meet, but they only had one entry left.
UT ended up sixth with that same total, which included 10 points from Ryan Crouser for his win in Wednesday's shot and 10 more from Johannes Hock for his decathlon victory.
Florida and Texas A&M split the national title with each posting 53 points. Arkansas was third with 46.50 and Oregon, the host school, tallying 44.
The Longhorns total was their best in the last five years at NCAAs.
Texas had 15 entries in nine events over the last four days, though only Patrick McGregor was in action Saturday at Hayward Field.
He had a promising start to the 1,500 meters in his second trip to the NCAA Outdoor meet, but fell coming around the final turn and ended up 12th with a time of 4:19.82.
"I was in the position I wanted to be with 400 to go," said McGregor, who led through the first 1,200 meters. "With 115-120 meters, I'm pretty open with my arms, but someone from behind hooked my arm as they were coming through too. When you're running that fast, it's really easy to lose balance. I didn't want to fall down. I'm in the top three in the NCAA final."
Mac Fleet of Oregon won the race in 3:50.25. Zach Perkins of Air Force, who was the runner that got tangled up with McGregor, was second in 3:50.39.
"This is not how I wanted to end my college career," McGregor said. "I was having the race of my life until there was 100 meters to go."
McGregor was not one of the favorites, but was hoping to finish in the top eight and put some points on the board.
"My coaches just told me to go out there and have fun," McGregor said. "I had nothing to lose in this race. I wasn't picked to do that well. I was going to get in the front and do the best I could. I tend to be more of an aggressive runner, but with 110 meters to go I wasn't trying to push people around."
McGregor ends his career with eight all-conference honors, including the 1,000-meter title in 2011. He also reached the semifinals of the 1,500m at last year's national outdoor meet.
This is the 13th time in head coach Bubba Thornton's 18 seasons the Longhorns have finished among the top 15, including seven in the top 10.
"We knew we would be top 10, but we really wanted to get in the top five," Thornton said. "But it's athletics. You have some really great things happen and then some other things happen you didn't plan on. I'm sure we witnessed that on every team here."
The Longhorns swept the Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor Conference titles this season for the third time in school history and had multiple outdoor individual national champions for just the fifth time.
"We're really proud of the year, the program and the young men we have in it and those coming back," Thornton said. "It's important right now that we look at the good, positive things we've done this year and how do we keep those in place."
Texas had its best total at the outdoor meet since 2008 when it tallied 35 en route to a fourth-place showing. This is the ninth time the Longhorns have scored 30 or more points at the outdoor national meet.
Meet Notes:
- Ryan Crouser won the second shot put title in the history of the Texas men's program on Wednesday. Dana LeDuc captured the shot put in 1976.
- This was the fourth consecutive year in which the Longhorns scored in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Hayden Baillio was sixth in 2010 and fourth in 2011. Jacob Thormaehlen was seventh last year.
* Johannes Hock's decathlon total (8,267) was not only the ninth-best mark in collegiate history, but also third in school annals. Hardee set the collegiate record (8,465) at the 2006 Texas Relays. Hock's total of 8,293 at the 2013 Big 12 meet ranks seventh all-time in college and second on the UT list. Isaac Murphy's total ranks fourth in school history (8,086). Murphy also has the fifth-best mark, totaling 8,067 at the 2012 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
- The Longhorns have scored twice in the decathlon at one other NCAA meet. Trey Hardee won the 2005 NCAA title and Donovan Kilmartin was fourth.
- This year's decathlon field may have been the deepest in NCAA history. Six athletes scored more than 8,000 points for the first time. The previous high was four in 1992.
- This the fifth time in school history the Longhorns have won multiple outdoor individual titles in the same season - Dag Wennlund (javelin), Eric Metcalf (long jump) and James Lott (long jump) in 1986; Jacob Davis (pole vault) and Mark Boswell (high jump) in 1999; Trey Hardee (pole vault) and Leo Manzano (1,500 meters) in 2005; Jacob Hernandez (800 meters), Leo Manzano (1,500 meters) and Maston Wallace (pole vault) in 2008.
- Craig Lutz's third-place finish in Thursday's 10,000 meters was the second-best finish in school history. Kamiel Maase was second in 1995. Lutz was the fifth Texas athlete to score in the 10,000 meters at the NCAAs. Ryan Dohner was seventh last season. Current Texas women's assistant coach Steve Sisson was fifth in 1993. Harry Green scored three times. He was seventh in 1986, sixth in 1988 and fifth in 1989.
