Longhorns' winning streak over the Horned Frogs ends at 33.
FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Texas women's basketball team lost to TCU 54-48 Sunday afternoon at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Longhorns could not overcome 26 turnovers and fell to the Horned Frogs for the first time in team history.
Texas was led by sophomore Brady Sanders with nine points, including three 3-pointers, and sophomore Imani McGee-Stafford with nine points and seven rebounds.
Texas started the contest with a 3-pointer just 10 seconds after tipoff by sophomore Empress Davenport to give Texas (12-6, 3-3) their only lead of the first half, 3-0 as the Longhorns were held scoreless over the next 5:29 until senior Chassidy Fussell hit a jumper at the 14:21 mark to cut the lead to two, 7-5. TCU (12-6, 3-3) led by as many as 11 in the first half due in part to their dominance in the middle as the Horned Frogs outscored Texas 24-to-8 in the paint and out-rebounded the Longhorns 24-to-19.
TCU finished the first half on a 9-to-4 run, and the Longhorns headed into the locker room trailing by 12, 30-18.
Texas opened up the second half on an 11-0 run to cut TCU's lead to one, 29-30. The Longhorns forced three turnovers and drew six fouls and held the Horned Frogs scoreless for the first 8:15 of the second half. TCU scored their first bucket of the half at the 11:22 mark off a layup by junior Natalie Ventress.
Fussell scored on a layup at the 10:03 mark to give Texas their first lead since the 18:49 mark of the first half. However, TCU responded with a quick 6-0 run to regain the lead, 38-33 until the Longhorns were able to tie it up 39-all off of a 3-pointer by sophomore Brady Sanders with 5:06 remaining.
Both teams traded baskets and free throws until TCU's Zahna Medley hit a 3-pointer at the 1:20 mark to put TCU up by two, 47-45. The Horned Frogs increased their lead to three off of a free throw by Latricia Lovings with 58 seconds remaining. Texas responded as Fussell sank a tough jumpshot and was fouled with 37 seconds remaining to bring Texas within one but was unable to convert at the free throw line, giving TCU the 48-47 advantage.
Texas was held scoreless for the last 37 seconds of the game, and TCU converted 4-of-4 free throws to close the game and seal the win, 54-48.
Zahna Medley lead the Horned Frogs with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Texas returns to the Erwin Center to face West Virginia on Saturday at 3 p.m. Central on Longhorn Network.
