Longhorns’ depth and second-half effort key factors in 46-point exhibition win.
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Women's Basketball used a 29-3 run to begin the second half on its way to a 102-56 exhibition victory over Oklahoma City University on Sunday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center.
"I like what I saw from all of our players tonight," head coach Karen Aston said. "I thought everyone gave a good effort. This was a game where you just looked at them and said, 'OK, what effort are you going to bring, and how well are you conditioned.' We are in a good place right now. We'll take this and learn some things and get better."
The Longhorns pulled away from a nine-point halftime lead by outscoring OCU 60-23 and shooting 71.9 percent from the field in the second half.
All 12 active Longhorns scored points, including five in double figures. The Texas bench outscored OCU's bench, 53-8. All Longhorns played in 10 minutes or more, led by freshman guard Brooke McCarty's 24 minutes of action.
Freshman guard Ariel Atkins led UT in scoring with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line in 16 minutes.
UT's three post players combined for 34 points and 24 rebounds, led by sophomore center Kelsey Lang's 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Nneka Enemkpali was one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes. Sophomore center Lilley Vander Zee visited the free throw line a team-high eight times in her first double-figure scoring effort of her career -- 11 points (3-5 FG, 5-8 FT) in 11 minutes.
Texas forced 25 OCU turnovers and held the reigning NAIA Division I champions to 29.4 percent shooting from the field. Rateska Brown's game-high 30 points led the Stars.
Through three exhibition games under coach Aston UT averages 99.3 points, including two 100-point games.
