12.23.2014 | Men's Basketball
Cardinal post 74-71 victory to snap UT's 15-game home win streak.
AUSTIN, Texas – Javan Felix led Texas with 19 points, including 12 points in the second half and overtime, but the No. 9/9 Longhorns fell to the Stanford Cardinal in overtime, 71-74, Tuesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. It marked the first home non-conference loss to an unranked team for Texas since losing to Wisconsin on Dec. 29, 2007.
Stanford (7-3) never led by more than four points and the game saw a total of 19 lead changes, with 17 coming in the second half and overtime combined. Texas (10-2) led for over 28 minutes against Stanford's 10.
In front of the largest home crowd of the year (13,661), Texas shot 25.0 percent in the overtime period after shooting 52.2 percent and 44.0 percent in the first two halves. The Longhorns could not hit a trey in overtime, shooting 0-of-4, to snap a four-game win streak in overtime contests.
Just as Texas opened the overtime period strong with four straight points, Stanford closed out the extra frame with four straight points en route to the victory.
Kendal Yancy registered a career-high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Jonathan Holmes also added 14 points. Felix scored at least 17 points for the second consecutive game, draining 17 against Long Beach State.
The score was knotted up at 31 points apiece through the first half despite Texas shooting 52.2 percent. Stanford crashed the boards to pull down eight offensive rebounds and tally eight second-chance points in the opening stanza.
Texas looked to have grabbed the momentum after a 6-0 run gave the Horns a 22-15 advantage with 6:58 left and forced a Stanford timeout. The Cardinal responded with an 8-0 run of its own to pull ahead 26-24 with just over three minutes left.
From there it was a tight contest the rest of the half. Stanford hit a layup with two seconds left to enter the locker room tied at the break.
Anthony Brown led the Cardinal with 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Chasson Randle added 22, combining for over 63 percent of Stanford's points between the two.
The Longhorns will have six days off until their next game, when they play host to the Rice Owls on Monday, Dec. 29. Tipoff is set for Noon at the Frank Erwin Center, and the contest will be televised nationally on Longhorn Network.
