Women's Basketball falls on the road to Iowa State, 81-64

AMES, Iowa – The Women's Basketball team fell to No. rv/23 Iowa State 81-64 Saturday night at the Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State broke a 51-all tie with 7:02 left in the second half and outscored the Longhorns 30-13 in the final minutes to come away with the win.
Texas was led by sophomore Imani McGee-Stafford who scored a career-high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds and a career-high four assists. Senior Chassidy Fussell also chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds.
In the first half, Texas raced out to a 7-0 lead after a perfect 3-for-3 start from the field, but Iowa State answered with a 12-0 run of their own, putting the Longhorns behind 12-7 at the 13:35 mark.
Freshman Kelsey Lang's layup at the 12:38 mark ended the Longhorns' 4:56 minute scoring drought and cut Iowa State's lead to three, 9-12.
Iowa State stretched their lead to as many as seven in the first half, but an 8-2 run by the Longhorns cut the lead to one, 22-23 with 4:40 remaining. Over the next 1:34, the Cyclones pulled ahead by six points, but Texas was able to cut the lead to two, 28-26 behind a 3-poimter by Fussell with 1:34 remaining. Neither team scored for the remainder of the half, leaving the Longhorns trailing by two heading into the locker room.
The second half featured six ties in the first 8:11 minutes, but the Longhorns were able to pull ahead 44-42 after freshman Brianna Taylor nailed a jumper at the 11:41 to break the sixth and final tie. A subsequent jumper by Fussell increased Texas' lead to four with 11:07 remaining.
Iowa State again took the lead at the 8:32 mark off a 3-pointer by Brynn Williamson. The Longhorns tied the score for the seventh time of the half off of a layup by McGee-Stafford, but an 13-0 run put the Cyclones back in front 64-51 with 4:14 remaining in the second half.
Texas was unable to close the gap as Iowa State built their largest lead of the game at 17 points, 72-55, with 1:38 remaining in the game. The Cyclones connected on nine consecutive free throws to secure the win, 81-64.
Hallie Christofferson led Iowa State with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Texas is back in action Tuesday, Feb. 25 against TCU at the Frank Erwin Center at 7:30 p.m. Central on Longhorn Network.
• Series: Iowa State leads, 15-11 overall and 9-2 in Ames.
• Starters: For the third time this season and the second straight contest, Celina Rodrigo, Brady Sanders, Chassidy Fussell, Nneka Enemkpali and Imani McGee-Stafford started for the Longhorns. The team is 0-3 with this lineup this season.
• Texas out-rebounded the Cyclones 39-36, marking the seventh time this season that the Longhorns have out-rebounded their opponent in a game which resulted in a loss.
• The Longhorns dished out 23 assists, which is a team high during conference play and the highest mark since recording 25 against Sam Houston State on Dec. 15, 2013.
Imani McGee-Stafford
• Scored a career-high 26 points (12-14 FG) with eight rebounds, a career-high four assists and three blocks in 25 minutes. McGee-Stafford's previous career-high in points was 25 against Kansas on Jan. 15, 2014.
• Her 12 field goals marked a personal career-high and the most by any current Longhorn in a game.
Chassidy Fussell
• Scored 15 points (6-11 FG, 3-5 3FG) with seven rebounds in a season-high 36 minutes.
• Fussell's seven rebounds is the most she has recorded in a conference game this season.
Brady Sanders
• Scored nine points (3-6 3FG) with five rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes.
• Leads the team in assists during the last six games (24; 4.0 apg).
Nekia Jones
• Scored six points and grabbed three rebounds in 10 minutes.
