ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 10 Texas Men's Tennis remains unbeaten after a 5-2 win road over Michigan on Friday night at the indoor Varsity Tennis Center.
For the first time this season the Longhorns (7-0) lost the doubles point to begin the dual match with a 1-0 deficit on Michigan's home court. Texas responded with five consecutive wins in singles competition to cinch the match and boost its dual match singles record to 32-4 (.889). The
"After Michigan jumped on us to earn the doubles point, our guys persevered and showed some fight and we were able to bounce with a good win," head coach Michael Center said. "This team is still developing and improving. With all the different match situations we have had this season -- at home, on the road, indoor, outdoor -- it is making us a stronger team."
Wolverines fall to 3-3 on the season.
Texas improves its all-time series lead against Michigan to 16-3. The Longhorns are off to their best start since 2011, when coach Michael Center led Texas to an 8-0 start.
#3 Doubles: Bernstein/Wong (MICH) def. Holiner/Lewis (UT) 6-2
Michigan started with a 6-2 victory over David Holiner and Jacoby Lewis at No. 3 doubles. It was Holiner and Lewis' second match as doubles partners this year (1-1).
#1 Doubles: Buzzi/Franks (MICH) def. #5 Glasspool/Hess-Olesen (UT) 6-4
The Wolverines clinched the doubles point as Alex Buzzi and Barrett Franks defeated UT's fifth-ranked Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen, 6-4. It marked Glasspool and Hess-Olesen's first loss of the dual match season (5-1) and just their third of the year (16-3).
#2 Doubles: Petrone/Zhu (MICH) vs. Goldhoff/Naumann (UT) 4-5, unfinished
Freshman George Goldhoff and sophomore Nick Naumann held a 5-4 lead against Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu when the doubles point was clinched. Goldhoff and Naumann were playing as doubles partners for just the second time of the year on Friday.
#2 Singles: #35 Lloyd Glasspool (UT) def. Vlad Stefan (MICH) 6-5 (7-5), 6-2
No. 35 Lloyd Glasspool improved to 6-1 in dual match play after defeating Vlad Stefan -- the first of five consecutive singles victories for the Longhorns in Friday's dual. Glasspool won close a tiebreaker in the first set, 6-5(5), and pulled away in the second, 6-2.
#1 Singles: #75 Søren Hess-Olesen (UT) def. Alex Petrone (MICH) 6-3, 6-5 (7-3)
No. 75 Søren Hess-Olesen continued to protect his No. 1 position in UT's lineup with a fifth consecutive singles victory over Michigan's Alex Petrone in straight sets.
#5 Singles: Nick Naumann (UT) def. Justin Rossi (MICH) 6-1, 4-6, 6-1
Nick Naumann earned a three-set win over Michigan's Justin Rossi with 6-1 set-victories in the first and third sets. Naumann was the third singles match to complete, giving UT a 3-1 dual match lead. The sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas improves to 13-4 overall this season after winning his seventh consecutive singles match on Friday.
"Nick is moving very well -- his game has become more complete and consistent this year," coach Center said. "He is really dictating on both sides of the court and that is great to see."
#3 Singles: #24 George Goldhoff (UT) def. Shaun Bernstein (MICH) 6-3, 6-4
Freshman George Goldhoff clinched the dual match victory for the Longhorns by defeating Michigan's Shaun Bernstein in straight sets - 6-3, 6-4. It marks the Irvine, Calif., native's first match-clinching singles victory at Texas.
#4 Singles: Adrien Berkowicz (UT) def. Barrett Franks (MICH) 5-6 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4
Despite the clinched victory for the Longhorns, the last two singles matches played to completion. Sophomore Adrien Berkowicz came back from a first-set loss to Michigan's Barrett Franks, winning the second set 6-1 and the third set 6-4. Berkowicz has won 11 of his last 12 singles matches, excluding one unfinished match.
#6 Singes: Kevin Wong (MICH) def. David Holiner (UT) 6-4, 4-6, 6-5 (7-4)
In the last remaining match of the night, David Holiner and Kevin Wong went back-and-forth before Wong prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker to hand Holiner his first loss of the dual match season.
