Longhorns’ fourth varsity eight places second in the 22-boat event.
AUSTIN, Texas – Headed by a second-place finish from its fourth varsity 8+ boat, Texas landed a pair of top-five finishes Saturday in the Fighting Nutria on Austin's Lady Bird Lake.
UT's fourth varsity 8+ boat placed second behind a men's crew from Austin Rowing Club in the 22-boat event. Texas finished the eight-kilometer race in 33 minutes, 9 seconds. The Longhorns' boat featured coxswain Paige Jones, stroke Rachel Trent, Lauren Britt, Morgan Starr, Naili Woelper, Allie Baker, Arie Guerra, Lauren Edwards and Sarah Gutberlet.
UT's novice 8+ boat took fourth place overall at 33:25.7. The boat featured coxswain Libby Hill, Bronwyn Baker, Morgan Yarbrough, Emily Carter, Adyson Mitchell, Hanna Bernbaum, Lilly Kim, Summer Walton and Katie Sepcich.
"This year's new rowers, now officially varsity rowers, did an excellent job of racing this morning in the Fighting Nutria," said UT head coach Carie Graves. "I was able to watch the last part of the race from my launch. They looked composed and strong as they came storming down the last 800 meters of the course. Both of our boats looked quite intent, intense and fierce, and I give kudos to them all. Our staff is looking forward to watching them race next month at the Longhorn Invite."
Texas' top-three varsity boats will engage in an informal scrimmage against Michigan Sunday (9 a.m. CT) on Lady Bird Lake.
