Junior Emma Ivory-Ganja logs career-best finish, secures third individual runner-up finish for the Longhorns.
MINNEAPOLIS – Texas junior diver Emma Ivory-Ganja steadily climbed the standings and finished as the runner-up in the platform diving event Saturday on the final day of the NCAA Championships.
Ivory-Ganja sat in fifth place through two of five rounds, but the UCLA transfer vaulted into third place with one round remaining by way of her back two-and-a-half somersault in the tuck position that netted over 70 points.
With four divers remaining in the final round, Ivory-Ganja registered a meet-best 76.80 points on her final dive, a two-and-a-half somersault with one-and-a-half twists. The final diver, USC's Haley Ishimatsu needed 66 points on her last dive to pass Ivory-Ganja, and Ishimatsu won the crown with 81 points for a total of 365.5 points. Ivory-Ganja placed second with 349.30 points.
Ivory-Ganja will leave Minneapolis with All-America honors in the platform and three-meter events and an honorable mention All-America finish on one-meter.
Texas closed the meet by taking fifth place in the 400 freestyle relay consolation final. Seniors Ellen Lobb and Alex Hooper, junior Gretchen Jaques and senior Samantha Tucker finished in 3:15.69.
Texas placed ninth for a third consecutive season at the NCAA Championships. The Longhorns totaled 144 points.
POST-MEET COMMENTS
Texas head coach Carol Capitani
We're never going to take a top-10 finish for granted. It was a complete team effort and a race (to stay in the top-10) until the last event of the meet. I'm really proud of our seniors. I'm proud of everyone who made it to this meet and competed. We raced tough and we were great competitors. I think even where in some races we fell short that there will be a lot of learning and growth to come from it.
