AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Men's Tennis defeated Tulsa on Sunday afternoon at Penick-Allison Tennis Center, 4-0. The eighth-ranked Longhorns improved to 8-0 at home this season at the conclusion of non-conference play.
"We talked about competing well in all nine spots and I thought we did a really good job of that today," head coach Michael Center said. "We were in position to win all three doubles matches and we got all six first sets."
In doubles, junior Adrien Berkowicz and freshman George Goldhoff swept Tulsa's Alejandro Espejo and Japie De Klerk 8-1 to extend their winning streak to five matches. Juniors Søren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool clinched the doubles point for UT with an 8-7 (4) win at the No. 1 position.
In singles, Texas won three in a row to clinch the dual match and the team's sixth shutout victory of the season. Berkowicz was the first to finish, defeating No. 108 Alejandro Espejo (6-1, 6-0) for his fourth win over a ranked opponent. After going back and forth until 4-all in the first set, sophomore Nick Naumann went on to win the next eight consecutive to earn the victory over Tulsa's Or Ram-Harel (6-4, 6-0).
Moments after Naumann completed his match, junior Clement Homs clinched the team win for Texas with a straight-set win over Juan Caravajal (6-2, 6-0). The victory improves Homs' winning streak to 10 matches.
"Clement has really improved overall, but where he has improved the most is on the practice court," Center said. "His consistency at practice has allowed him to gain a lot of confidence and play more consistently in the matches.
Texas begins conference play on Friday against No. 1 Oklahoma at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The dual match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Central.
"We have worked all year to play our best tennis at the end, so we are in good shape," Center said. "We have played a very competitive schedule. I know the guys are excited and I know Oklahoma will be excited so we are really looking forward to Friday night."
