Longhorns pick up singles wins from Lina Padegimaite, Pippa Horn and Breaunna Addison in the final women’s match at Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 14 Baylor (21-6, 9-0 Big 12) took the final three points in a third-set tiebreaker at fourth singles to escape with a 4-3 win over No. 20 Texas (11-11, 6-3 Big 12) Friday evening in the final women's match at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
With the team score knotted at three, the match was decided by the fourth singles contest featuring Texas' Neda Koprcina and Baylor's Blair Shankle. Koprcina trailed 4-1 in the third set before holding serve, breaking Shankle and holding once more to even the set at four. Both players held serve until the match progressed to a tiebreaker.
Koprcina took a 5-4 tiebreaker lead with a passing forehand winner, but Shankle forced a pair of errant Koprcina returns to set up match point for Baylor. A Shankle forehand winner put away the narrow victory for Baylor.
In doubles, Texas claimed the first decision at the second slot, but the Bears won at the remaining two positions to win the doubles point. UT started off strong at first doubles when Breaunna Addison and Elizabeth Begley blanked Baylor's Victoria Kisialeva and Jordaan Sanford and won 8-0.
Baylor's Alex Clay and Blair Shankle responded and dealt Texas' Juliana Gajic and Pippa Horn an 8-2 defeat at third doubles. At second doubles, Baylor's Ema Burgic and Kiah Generette took a 7-4 lead on UT's Ratnika Batra and Neda Koprcina. The Texas tandem broke and held serve to pull within 7-6, but Baylor held serve in the ensuing game to close out the 8-6 win.
Baylor pushed its lead to 3-0 behind wins at the second and third singles positions. UT commenced a rally at sixth singles, where Lina Padegimaite posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Baylor's Alex Leatu. Texas' Horn sliced the Baylor lead to 3-2 with her 7-5, 6-3 win over BU's Clay at fifth singles.
The match at first singles featured a tight two-set battle between Texas' Addison and Baylor's Generette. Addison took a 4-0 first-set lead and held on to win the set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (0). Addison trailed 5-3 in set two before breaking Generette twice and holding serve twice to claim the match and even the team score at three. Shankle's win at fourth singles closed out the match.
Texas opens postseason play next Friday (April 25) in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship. The Longhorns' seed and quarterfinal opponent will be released Saturday evening.
