LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 7 Texas Men's Tennis clinched a share of the Big 12 Conference regular season title with a 5-1 victory over No. 27 Texas Tech on Saturday night at The Falls Athletic Club.
Texas (20-4, 4-1 Big 12) earns its seventh Big 12 regular season title and first since 2010.
"It is not easy to win a title in the Big 12 when you have three teams ranked in the top seven," head coach Michael Center said. "I'm very proud of the way our guys have played hard all year and the way they took care of business tonight. There is still a lot to play for in the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments, but this is a great accomplishment for our program."
The Longhorns conclude the regular season with a 7-3 record against ranked opponents, including a 3-1 mark against top-10 opponents. UT has won 11 of its last 13 matches.
Men's Tennis becomes the fifth University of Texas program to capture a Big 12 Conference championship during the 2013-14 athletics season, joining Volleyball, Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving and Women's Indoor Track and Field.
Prior to first serve, rain and hail in Lubbock moved Saturday's match inside to the four-court venue at The Falls Athletic Club. Singles swapped with doubles as the first to event to start competition.
The Longhorns won the first four singles matches against Texas Tech (13-9, 1-4) in order of position to clinch the team win. Doubles teams did not compete.
Junior All-American Søren Hess-Olesen capped off an undefeated Big 12 season at No. 1 singles with a straight-set win over Tech's 108th-ranked Felipe Soares (6-2, 6-3). 19th-ranked Hess-Olesen (25-6, 16-2 dual) has won seven consecutive matches, including a 5-0 mark against Big 12 opponents without losing a single set. The Denmark native totals a team-best 12 wins over nationally ranked opponents this season.
No. 38 junior Lloyd Glasspool gave UT a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win over Tech's 100th-ranked Hugo Dojas (6-1, 7-6[6]). Junior Adrien Berkowicz followed by notching his team-best 26 overall win this season to give Texas a 3-0 lead, defeating Tech's Francisco Zambon (6-4, 6-4).
No. 91 freshman George Goldhoff clinched the team win with a straight-set victory over Maxime Hinnisdaels (6-3, 7-6[2]).
Sophomore Nick Naumann finished an undefeated Big 12 regular season at No. 5 singles (5-0) with a win over Jolan Cailleau (7-6[5], 6-2), which gave UT a 5-0 lead. Naumann leads the team with eight consecutive singles victories and 19 wins during the dual match season.
Junior Clement Homs lost for just the second time this dual match season after dropping a close third-set tiebreaker with Tech's Carlos DiLaura (3-6, 6-2, 1-0[11]). Homs is 12-2 this spring.
Texas shares the Big 12 regular season title with No. 6 Baylor (21-5, 4-1). No. 2 Oklahoma (20-2, 3-1) has a chance to join Texas and Baylor atop the Big 12 standings when they face Oklahoma State on Sunday in Stillwater.
The league's six squads will meet at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Complex April 24-27 to compete in the 2014 Big 12 Tennis Championships. Seeds will be announced at the conclusion of Sunday's match between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
